My 14 year old daughter is currently getting Neurofeedback treatments for ADhD (inattentive type) and other coexisting issues.  It is still too early to tell, but we have noticed improved mood, emotion control, and she is more conversational.  She has only had 4 treatments and I would expect her to have about 20 total.  I will report more later as we see results.

The QEEG Brain Mapping was amazing...they read my daughter like a book.  I'm not sure if all Neurofeedback facilities offer this or not, but it is a fantastic test for those who have more going on than just ADHD.

BTW - I researched this a ton before taking my daughter.  I was skeptical and wondered why I hadn't heard of it before since it was suposedly so effective. (Research shows that 4 out of 5 will see positive results)....I think that the answer is that it is just really new technology.  Our doctors were educated at The University of Chicago and Northwestern.....pretty legit schools.   So we are trying it.

Best of Luck to you...

Check the at-home versions. There's PlayAttention and Smartbrain. Probably more.

For in-office treatment they'll start you at 20 sessions, but it winds up being more like 40 for most people if you search the board. The cost is around $3000-$6000 I believe.

Also, look into Interactive Metronome. You need to go to an occupational therapist (or other) trained in the use, and last time I checked the cost was $1700. Dance Dance Revolution that you will find in video arcades is a simplistic version if you want to check it out.

Ok...just wanted to update you....

Parent teacher conferences were yesterday.  Every teacher said that they noticed significant improvement in my 14 year old daughter's mood and focus since she started the Neurofeedback treatments.  She has only had about 6 treatments so far.

I know that there are a lot of other products on the market that all aim to get the brain waves in a proper pattern.  I went with the Neurofeedback to target it better rather than a "one size fits all" sort of approach.  But we had more issues than just ADhD.

We have the Dance Dance Revolution game.  I am not sure that it does the same thing....you have to be pretty coordinated so it really goes beyond training concentration...but that is just my opinion.

Will update again soon.

Bets of luck to you all.

Currently undergoing NFT for my 8 y/o son.  We've had about 7 treatments so far.  The jury is still out...This is our "please God let this work", as meds have been effective intreating the adhd symptoms, but side effects (tics) are awful for him.  I hear many positive things about NFT, but right now wehave gone to "a little better" then to "my child is now the devil"...I am hoping this gets better.  The therapist assures me that it will, but right at this moment in time he has NEVER been so bad.  We are trying to titrate meds right now, too, which I'm sure complicates things.  Cost is a bit of an issue, but not as bad as some quotes i have seen on this board.  Our therapist offers a bundle package that costs $600 for 10 sessions.  This is the "cash" price, and less than my $70 per visit co-pay with insurance.  I will try to keep posting for progress since it seems there are a lot of folks asking and few replies from folks who have gone this route.  I am hoping that maybe it is so effective these folks no longer need the support of message boards???Dare I hope???LOL!

ok, here's my update:  after 30 treatments, we have been able to cut meds from 41 mg stim. meds to 18, Straterra from 40 to 25mg.  Apparently when he "turns into the devil" is the signal that it is time to titrate down.  It seemed backwards to me at first, but worked.  We are taking a break for a while as he has gotten a bit resistent to the treatments (bored and wanting more playtime).  After a month of no treatments i have seen no relapse in progress, so i am thinking there is truth in the results being permanent, or at least really long lasting.

Hi 100mph I'm so happy to hear that you have had good results with NFT. We have had similar results.  My daughter was on 70mg Vyvanse and 20mg Lexapro for her ADhD and GAD.  She has Trichotillomania which is similar to tics, but instead of a tic she compulsively pulls her hair (mostly brows and lashes).  She used to have no life outside of school and homework with lots of tears and stress.

I'm not sure how many NFTs she has had.  They have been working on both the ADhD and Anxiety.  She loves her NF psychologist and the NFT have significantly changed her life.  She is now going to the library with a friend after school. She is much more relaxed about studying and more social.

We reduced her Vyvanse to 40mg early on and last week we completely eliminated the Vyvanse.  The Psychiatrist said that it should take her about 3 weeks to adjust and see if she can perform without it.  Maybe we should have titrated better.  She was exhausted after day 3 or 4 but seems to be doing better now on day 10.  Her mood is better too.

Now we are trying NFT to help with the Trichotillomania.

I will try to keep posting with future results.

Best of luck to all of you.

Thank you all so much for these posts. My son attends equine assisted psychotherapy sessions and the couple that works with him just gave me a pamphlet for the NFT center where they work during the week. I had not really read up on this type of treatment before, because we were so hopeful that we could find a med that would help my son. The problem is that he has some other issues, esp. sensory and anxiety, and every med has had unacceptable side-effects.

I may not be able to afford it right now (I'm a single mom of two), but knowing that others have had positive results makes me want to start saving up so that we can. I was hesitant to start putting aside money for something I'd never heard about, and then I get on here today and there are two threads. Again, thank you for these positive updates!!

Hi,
My experience with NFT is actually not that great! My 6 year old daughter is under the treatment right now! Initially, she was improving a little bit. BUt then when the doc switched around the spots to adjust her brainwave. It confuses her a lot. Now,she is even more anxious and screaming amost every evening.

I am struggling if I should continue to let her keep doing NFT. What do you guys think about??
