Type of Professional: Psychologist
Quote: "I believe in cutting edge, innovative treatment that is also scientifically based and supported by published evidence." Biography: Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, clinical psychologist and generally known as “the brain guy”, began his career in biofeedback in 1973 when he joined the staff of a research project at UCI Medical Center investigating the possibility of biofeedback control over stomach acid secretions to aid in ulcer treatment. In this work he recognized a promising future, and made a decision to dedicate himself to the emerging field concerned with voluntary control over physiological function through the use of biological feedback. He went on to eventually direct the biofeedback services at a chain of 24 alcoholism hospitals across the country, doing early research which helped lead the way for the current use of EEG Biofeedback as a powerful adjunct to the treatment of alcohol and drug abuse. Dr. Wilson spent the next 12 years as the senior clinician of the Biofeedback and Stress management Program at Hoag Hospital, in Newport Beach. By the end of his work at Hoag he focused mostly on EEG Biofeedback, or Neurofeedback, in the treatment of Substance Abuse, Attentional Disorders, Anxiety, Headache, and Head Injury. Concurrently Dr. Wilson established a Neurofeeback treatment program at Hope Institute, a continuation high school and drug abuse treatment center in Costa Mesa. He moved into private practice in Irvine in 1999, and shortly thereafter was introduced to the treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders by the mother of a patient who sought out Dr. Wilson for the Neurofeedback treatment of her 5 year old autistic son. This was one of those cases where the ABA supervisor phoned Dr. Wilson to say: “I don’t know what it is you are doing, but keep doing it! This client has made more rapid improvement since he has been working with you than we have ever seen for him before.” In 2005 Dr. Wilson joined forces with a long established clinic in Torrance named ADD Treatment Center, to open a second ADD Treatment Center in Mission Viejo. The two centers specialize in evaluation and treatment of brain-based disorders. The most visible focus of the two centers is attentional disorders, although nearly an equal number of their clients are in the Autistic Spectrum. Dr. Wilson has specialized since 1998 in using Quantitative EEG (QEEG) evaluation to aid in diagnosis and guide Neurofeedback treatment. Dr. Wilson was born in Long Beach, California. He earned Bachelor, Master, and PhD degrees at UCI. He currently lives in the foothills of Saddleback Peak, with his wife, two young children, one dog, and six cats. Services Offered

ADD Treatment Centers, in Torrance and Mission Viejo, provide evaluation and treatment for child and adult ADD, ADHD, and other brain-based disorders including Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Tic Disorders, Learning Disorders, and more. Our treatment specialty is Neurofeedback, or EEG Biofeedback, a non-drug therapy in which we monitor the brain’s electrical activity and use that information to train the brain toward improved function using a video game feedback system. Neurofeedback has been in use for over thirty years, and is the most researched ADD therapeutic alternative to medication, with success rates shown to be comparable or better than medication. Our evaluation options include the QEEG (Quantitative Electroencephalogram) which is a full head EEG recording done in our office. The client’s raw EEG is compared to normative databases in order to provide statistical indicators of where and how the client’s brain is functioning abnormally. The QEEG results are then used to pinpoint locations and frequencies that will provide the best results for Neurofeedback training. We have been using the QEEG to guide our Neurofeedback training for over eight years, and our highly successful treatment outcomes are testimony to the effectiveness of our methods. Neurofeedback is an excellent therapy for the child or adult who cannot or does not want to take medication. It can also augment medication therapy, improving a drug's effectiveness while allowing for dose reduction. Neurofeedback is our sole specialty, and we are recognized experts in the evaluations and treatments that we provide. We expect to work in conjunction with physicians, psychotherapists, educational specialists, or other practitioners who may provide concurrant treatment. |
