Learning to Drive with ADD/HD | ADHD Information
I am curious how learning to drive was for other ADD/HDers. It was difficult for me. First my dad tried and got fed up and yelled at me while I was driving, which did a lot to calm me down. Then my brother tried, that ended when I drove his car into the snowbank. My mom didn't even try! Finally, they hired our neighbor who used to teach driver's ed. Things went just fine after that!I was 14, it was raining, we had a
1/2 mile walk up a muddy hill to the bus stop, my parents were at work,
so I suggested we take the Land Rover, so I drove it to the bus stop.
Didn't hit anything, but got hit nonetheless...
I'm teaching my 15 yr. old daughter to drive, who has ADHD. She gets nervous, forgets which blinker to turn on when she is driving, can't listen to the radio while she is driving because it distracts her, the other day she pulled of our driveway and got on the wrong side of the road! There were no other cars, and I wanted her to realize what she had done on her own, I asked her "What are you doing wrong right now?". She thought really hard, and said "I dont' know". Then I made her get on the right side of the road. Then another day she was driving and a car coming towards us on the other side of the road put on its blinker to turn. She stopped in the middle of the highway to let them turn in front of her.............the car behind us cameto a screeching stop, almost hitting us because my daughter just suddenly stopped. I cant' imagine turning her loose by herself. It scares me to death.
I smacked the front ride side of the car into a cement poll the day I got my permit. My parents got sooo mad at me. The front side part of the car fell off and I felt terrible. Fortunately, it wasn't nearly as bad as it looked, so we could just pop the front piece back in and now there is just a small scratch there.
Learning to drive was tough for me, too - I kept wondering why somebody hadn't come up with an easier way to make cars go. My Dad yelled at me a lot (which didn't help), but I got through it eventually.
Now that I have my license though, I love driving.
