I'm not a "sinner" and I don't deserve "hell." Pray away, David!

The unabashedly secular Wordwoman

I'm sorry for your loses through this hurricane.  I hope that our country can all pull together and help instead of letting these disasters tear us apart.

I think that the reason we don't see this on the news 24/7 is because we understand hurricanes.  They are nature.  We've seen their kind of destruction before.

When 9-11 happened, we were facing a new enemy.  So we continue the fight of terrorism, but you can't fight mother nature.  Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes . . we can only try to be more prepared and to move to higher ground.

Great idea to send clothing and linens. I have been trying to figure out a way to help besides the money that I don't have because it is all going to my vehicle for freakin' gas! I don't know how much you all are paying where you are, but here it hit .19 today for regular! (Eastern Maine)

I seriously wanted to donate clothing, blankets, linens to help the people in New Orleans and elsewhere left homeless by Katrina. However, when I went to the Red Cross in my area, this is what found:

http://www.redcross.org/article/0,1072,0_312_4498,00.html
Why does the Red Cross discourage donations of collected goods and individual items for disaster relief?

Collections of items require valuable and scarce resources such as time, money, and personnel to sort, clean, and distribute them, which come at the expense of the emergency activities relief workers are attempting to perform. The Red Cross has neither the resources, nor the logistical set-up, to properly handle these types of donations, and therefore cannot accept them.

In addition, because the organization has no way of knowing what spontaneous individual donations or unsolicited collections of items will consist of, and therefore cannot ensure there will be enough of a particular item to distribute it equitably, or if the donated products will even be appropriate for the relief effort.

Shipping donated goods is also costly and particularly difficult in the aftermath of a disaster, as roads are often damaged or impassable, and easily clogged with shipments of non-priority items. The Red Cross makes every attempt to procure items locally to save money by minimizing transportation and storage costs.
They're also concerned about the cleanliness of clothing, etc. I would think ANYTHING is better than what they have now, wouldn't you??

I suppose it makes sense, so I guess I'll just donate to organizations in my area to help people here, since I can donate $ to Katrina relief.
Wow david, your poem brought one to my mind:

                This world is a mess
and we are all in distress
Deliver us from all our fear
do what it takes to draw us near
to YOU.I don't debate with bible-thumpers. Let's keep this board on topic.
I'm not a "sinner" and I don't deserve "hell." Pray away, David!
I won't see you in Hell, then.

What have you done to deserve Heaven?
I'm interested in whether your experience with God is in terms of whether you
"can't" or whether you "won't," with regard to believing what He says in His Word, woman.
I don't debate with bible-thumpers. Let's keep this board on topic.
1. You started it.
2. I don't thump my Bible.
3. I will defend my beliefs, no apologies.
4. There are Boots being bagged in the Middle East, and enemy soldiers being stitched up for OUR freedom of speech.
5. This is on topic~ how to deal with suffering and death when you're AD...
6. Are you on topic?
7. I'll finish it.

Done

I have ADD with Anxiety.  I've been taking Prozac for my Anxiety.  I've been coping well and the list of things with work, my family, taking dh's ex to court for child support, dh's family issues, my family issues, extended family issues - I've been doing remarkably well.

But I'm having a hard time dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.  I grew up in Alabama, about 3 hours from the coast.  You grow up down there with a pervasive fear of Hurricanes.  Luckily none of my family members were harmed, though some relatives are without power.

I was stationed at Keesler AF, next to Biloxi, Mississippi for 3 months.  I just can't fathom the devastation.  Even though I was an hour from New Orleans, I never visited there.  I always wanted to go and see the old homes through the Garden District, etc.  Now there's no reason to.  Even if they rebuild New Orleans, it will not be the same.

It's just so sad.  In my own way I'm grieving watching these victims and their horror stories.

It's very scary. We all saw the hurricane coming on the news, but I don't think anyone realized how devestating it would be. The effect just sort of took everyone by surprise. One day to nearly destroy a whole major city.Great idea!  These poor people - most of them didn't have flood insurance so they've truly lost everything.
I am wondering if this whole country has ADHD. It blows my mind that a
whole city has been destroyed, with maybe thousands dead, yet it is
being played like just another news story. Why isn't TV programming
being preempted like it was for 9-11 or for the Iraq invasion? (Could it
be that this time, there isn't any need for the American populace to be
whipped into an aggressive frenzy?)
Most likely because 'they' (unfortunately) believe everyone has CNN and other cable news stations (and weather channel, as well). Because they have been showing 24/7 news about the devistation caused by Katrina.    Even the local news rarely tell us much about anything these days...just telling us for more to go to the web...it's totally unfair for those who only have TV!

I only wish there was something I could do to help the people affected by the storm...besides $, which I have none to donate. Perhaps as I attempt to clean out my mess of a home, I can package up clothes, linens, etc. and ship them to the Red Cross for these folks...or drop off at the Red Cross here for them to send.Yeh, me too.

May God bless them.
Have a yard sale and send the money...

We're going to have a fuel shortage and money is lighter...

'sides, they don't have roads for the trucks to travel yet.
My husband travels 2 hrs daily to work and home since this weeks increase we have seen him 1 time. He has been sleeping at his folks. I guess this how things will be for now.

I am also having a hard time "dealing" with this devistating mess and I do not know anyone in that area. I find that I am "hyperfocusing" on the 24/7 news (yup, I have CNN and MSNBC). Everytime I turn on the TV, that's what I feel inclined to tune into. The anxiety and worry just won't stop.

AND ANGER!  (political anger-I'll refrain unless asked!)

Anyway, my mind is racing and just won't shut off...I'll mention that to my counselor tomorrow

.05 in CenCal for regular. Diesel is 3.59. Poor truckers...

I parked my diesel F350 and am driving my Explorer instead. As little as possible.

I heard some scalpers were charging .00/ gallon somewhere.

I bet al-Queada is just loving this. Thinks Allah had something to judge us for...

I bet Allah had something to judge them for, too, eh? (the tragedy on the bridge in Baghdad).

I pray to God that we all see we're all sinners, and deserve hell, were it not for the redemption of Jesus Christ, the Prophet and Son of God. And in accepting that, we all live as family on a fragile planet.

May God Bless Iraq

and

May God Bless America

and

May God Bless the Gulf States
