Goooood news!Hello, I had been for months, researching a lot on ADHD, which my son has. He's 7. This is the first time I dare to post on the internet. I wanted to share the good news, that for the past 6 months, he has gone a loooooong way. I found in several international forums, about Melotone syrup. I could see the difference in about two weeks. All the problems you mention in your posts (defiant, gullible, distracted, talk too much, exposing himself once in a while, not adapting to changes, disruptive in group situations, etc.) have been greatly alleviated. He doesn't forget his books at school, he completes all of his projects at school, with a legible handwriting! He is much calmer, a better listener, and hasn't lost any of his charm or spunk. The teacher says he is very active in class and talks a lot, but he is manageable. Very different from what I had experienced since he started preschool, which I don't repeat, b/c you all have described it very well. Last week, he received a small reward from the teacher, for completing all his schoolwork with a nice handwriting. I just sat down and cried... praising our Lord. I have to mention that I ALSO pray A LOT. I pray for patience, I pray for being able to show my son boundaries, and at the same time, to build his self esteem, which had been pretty bruised in kindergarden and 1st grade. His first kindergarden teacher even hit him once!! I pray, not to be a perfect mom, but to be the mother he needs. I don't believe in stimulants. The metamphetamines were used in the 1970s by women who wanted to lose weight (they supress appetite). My mother used them and boy, the side effects were horrible, horrible, horrible. When I knew that all the stimulants for ADHD contain metamphetamines, I swore myself that my son would never, ever have them in his brain, after what they did to my mom. And it took her years to become "normal" again. I also bought a book by Barry Sears, The Miracle of Rx Omega-3. It is more focused on diet and wellness, but their approach to EFAs, a balanced diet and the treatment of ADHD (and other mental illnesses) is spectacular to say the least. Anyway, my son is still stubborn, he is still restless at times, but he is much more comfortable to be around. Even my friends and neighbors tell me so. I hope my testimony brings a little more hope and "fuel" to your own journeys, which I feel are part of my own journey now. In Christ, Congratulations on your good news!
I know what you mean about medications. I am adamantly opposed to
kids taking drugs, but at the same time, I know some kids need
them. (Mine is one of them.) I'm glad you've been able to
find something else that works. I've read about Omega-3's a lot, and have decided to wait with that. From what I've read, that part of treatment is more geared toward adults. (Please be careful with that if you choose to use it.) On a personal note, I also pray a lot - for my son and myself. Sometimes it's the only thing that gets me through a tough time. ![]() Good Luck! Hopper77, I wish you would read the alternatives and complimentary board. There are folks who are having great success with Omega's and these are children. Please don't write it off for your child. Actually, Melotone syrup HAS omegas, in the forms of salmon oil and evening primrose oil, plus a lot of vitamins and minerals that have been found to be low in ADHD children (magnesium, B6, etc.). It doesn't contain any iron, which I supplement separately, as many ADHD children have been found to be deficient in seroferritines, even though they might not be anemic. I started supplementing my own diet with Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil (Omega-3, pharmaceutical grade), and so far, it has only done good things to me. Better hair, better nails, much better concentration and better sleep. So, I might try it on my son in a few weeks, just to see. Omega-3s are not a drug, they are exactly the same thing that Enfamil is adding to its Lipil baby formulas. Thank you for posting!! Hi pjjp39, I totally understand your view. Also, I think everybody reacts differently to medications. Since my son's grandma (my mom) did sooooo badly with metamphetamines, I am very scared of them. So far, the natural supplementation has helped a lot in JP's case. We as parents try to do our best, and making this type of decisions is the toughest part. I am glad to know that Adderall is not causing him any side effects, as has with many children
I am new to this website but I get the feeling that many people are down on the medication.
It isn't so much that we are down on medication as that we consider meds to be the last resort. If your child needs them to function, then you would be wrong to not give them to him. If our children can take supplements and learn to manage their ADHD without meds, then it is up to us to follow that route. Since many ADHDers will have ADHD all their lives, it is our responsibility to enable our children to live with it in the way that is best for them. jpmom, i'm glad that things are looking up for your son.. whatever you are doing must be working
I am new to this website but I get the feeling that many people are down on the medication. My ten year old was in lala land before he started on Adderall. He could not focus at all. He started two years ago and what a difference. He drew a picture that showed the pill locking his imagination up when he is in school but letting his imagination out at recess and after school. He says he can focus better and he asks that we keep him on the medication. We tried Strattera and that was scary but Adderall seems to do the trick. I know there are kids on medication that would not have to be but for some it is a godsend. We fought putting him on medication for a long time but I am glad we did. Hello. I have been hearing about the essential fatty oils and have not tried them yet but can you tell me more about the melatone syrup and where you get it, how you give it etc. i have a 6 1/2 yo girl with adhd. thanks so much. ccWe all lack in vitamins cause of how things are grown inless it is organic. We all can benefit in supplementation. I grew up on supplementation and rarely was ill. As a adult my issue now is hypothyroid/positive antibodies. The meds on this have made little difference in how I feel still tired. I know use natural sleep pills when needed. I have had several car accidents which effect my left arm and neck. I also take a supplement for oiling my joints. For 38 almost I sure feel older. It made little difference for me and our son. If focus is the main issue here I could see how it might help. Neither one of us learns how schools teach. We are both handson/auditory. Today test score are what matter. 70% to them is mastery to us that means they didn't get it really. We believe in do til it is really mastered well. We listened to the Pearls who Hsed their kids. The did it all cheaply. The used Walmart stuff mostly. Also not all stuff in education is used daily. I forgot a lot of the stuff taught. There are different publishers with different styles. I suggest find the one that fits the child. This is why I say public education isn't for all.
