4th grade no med continues....advice??

psm, what is a neuropsych? what could they recommend different? I'm willing to try any alternatives if I could find them.....

My son did see a pediatric neurologist where he got the diagnosis and that guys only suggestion was meds, which we tried adderall first (a nightmare) and then concerta which was much better as far as mood swings. Then recently we went to a "child development center" where the ped and the psychologist both think he's very bright but  has anxiety and recommended cognitive therapy (but I cant find anyone as of yet!)

So we're a little stuck til I find a good therapist (but I will have to DRAG son there and will that even be healthy?)

Ok thanks for all thoughts guys!

If stimulants make him nervous and he doesn't like them (and there is a reason he doesn't like them) perhaps they are the wrong meds for him. He may not even have ADHD, even if he fidgets. Has he ever seen a NeuroPsych? Good luck whatever you decide, but I'd think twice about putting him back on stimulants if he were my child.

Hi Guys,

Well its been about 5 weeks now of my son in 4th grade, no meds. Last year, he developed an anger and hatred for seeing any doctor and resentment at having to take meds and we said we'd try this year no meds. It was an ok start, but is rocky at times and now I'm wishing he'd at least try his old med (concerta 18 or 27mg) again to see if he felt better at school...  He definitely has anxiety issues which the meds make worse.

But ya know I thought he was cranky on the meds and he's definitely moodier, but he is still super super negative and its driving me nuts.

He is NOT doing schoolwork up to his potential --it's killing me but he doesn't seem to mind (other than the fact that I mind)...Last year he never missed a spelling word, he is just one of those people that see a word and remember it, and now he misses at least one (oh that sounds petty but I feel like he shouldn't)- and math used to come pretty easy and now its not...He got his first D on a quiz where they had to watch a video at school and he must've been in la-la land. Not that he's failing miserably but I think he's not as attentive or clear obviously, and has done some wierd impulsive things (pulling arms into shirt etc) I've heard. Yet this does not bother him he insists.

I've been told to get him cognitive therapy but have yet to FIND someone to help us, plus with his horrible attitude the thought of getting him there is awful. But I'm going to, because he and I both need some help. I feel like I"m ruining him.  But ya know what, he is much much easier going OFF the meds and doesn't fall apart etc. Should I convince him to take meds then watch his anxiety worsen and him cry at nothing etc? Its so hard and I know you guys know what I mean. I wanted so badly for him to just do ok with no meds, and he sort of is, but now I see he's not working at his potential, but for now, for fourth grade, should that be ok? I mean hes smart and not struggling, just not excelling....

Oy, thanks so much for listening guys, its 3am and I just can't stop dwelling. He and I have had a rough year as I have no patience and I don't want to ruin his self esteem. I need therapy to learn how to deal with him but have yet to find any good recommendations. WHy aren't there more adhd pros out there? We live in Tampa, any suggestions? Ok I'll quit rambling, thanks for listening, any advice always welcome:) Ya'll are in my prayers, we have such a different life at times with these on the go go go kids:)

hi tiredmomma, i really empathise with you, and i am sure everyone else on this list does so too... to medicate or not to - the question that runs through all our minds and hearts..
have you tried alternative therapies??  supplements are the first major one.. also cognitive therapy would also be beneficial..

good luck with whatever you choose - you know your son best..
