The patch with meds is totally fine!!
The nicotine patch is a slow release system - designed to give just enough in your blood to be equivalent to the particular cigarette it's designed to replace. Now if you got them stronger than you smoke you'd find fast heartbeat and anxiety until your body gets used to the increased nicotine.
Other than that - go with it! Welbutrin is fine too - my doc recommended I try the pill to quit when I'm ready to try. So you have tons of resources. Me - I'm not ready yet. When I am I'll probably try the patch first it's easier than pills.
