Depending on a Pill.... | ADHD Information

Share
I didn't want to take a pill at first, but when I finally did, and remembered to, I realized I wasn't a mini me, I was maximized, and able to function successfully for a change. I'm trippin' for 8 years now, and plan to the rest of my life. I'm a 49er.

Bite the bullet, and take the plunge.

I wish I had been diagnosed when I was your age. (found out when I was 45).  If I had, maybe I wouldn't have all this baggage.

Glad your here, welcome to the forum.

LTC - you're in the boat most of us floated in on.  I was 37 when diagnosed.

Seems to be a common theme.  Probably it has at least some to do with our inability to deal with unpleasant reality.  We might have the evidence right in front of us - only to shield ourselves with inattentiveness, denial, lies, etc.  I don't think I did but I certainly didn't go seeking until I lost it all.  Wish I had been faster for sure LOL

As to baggage - it's all part of the game of life isn't it?? Why else are so many people without ADHD going to therapy too?? And why else would a pinhead like Dr. Phil or Dr. Laura make even a small portion of what they do?? (hate them I do!! ugh!)

My baggage is a lot lighter since I started my meds and therapy.  Still carrying an overnight bag's worth - but my burden is mostly gone now that I understand why I do what I do and have better ways to do them.

As always - glad to see ya!

i used to feel that way when i was in high school having at the time to take prozac.  but i never told anyone i was on it as i was ashamed of it at the time.  but andy just remember therre are alot of people just like you in the world with the same problems, they just choose not to talk about it either.

do you feel ashamed to take tylenol when you have a headache?  i am going to assume the answer is no....

however do not feel ashamed for bettering your life and being the best you can by taking  a pill....most kids your age wouldnt do that and you are a greaat person for taking that first step...best of luck to you and keep us posted....

welcome to the forum.

andy, maybe concerta is making you feel sick..  concerta doesn't work on everyone and there isn't one pill to suit all ppl..
have you tried other meds??
Does anyone else feel kinda upset that you have to depend on a little tiny pill for you to finish, start, complete work without falling a sleep or day dreaming ? Well whenever I take concerta I notice I become less social and become more quite and a more serious person in general sometimes that can be good and sometimes bad.

In one semester in school I tried to go the whole semester without taking the pill. Well it was a failure the only classes I passed was P.E and Art. I have 1 more year of high school left and I have come to the conclusion that I need this pill to succeed in the classroom, I also notice when I started to retake the pill I became very very ill and had horrible anger and depression issues which I hate, also my neck becomes every stiff but that usually go's away after a couple days.

Sorry guys I just needed a place to vent, I'm real glad I stumbled on this forum because sometimes I feel like a giant moron depending on a pill just for me to remember simple things like my phone number but I know theres a ton of people just like me dealing with this stuff.

Andy -

People are dependent on all sorts of things!  If you were talking about a diabetic - would you ask if they were upset at having to use insulin to avoid the illness and potential for death?  It's a fact of life that humans are imperfect - we are all born with little "glitches" that sometimes can cause us to seek things to try and make life more livable.

I find my medication is never a burden!  In fact - with my memory improved and more reliable even remembering to take it is no big deal.

Don't sweat the small stuff Andy.  This is just a part of our lives - like remembering to brush our teeth - or learning new skills for work or play.  The pills are here for our benefit so we can feel more like the rest of the world does.

Perhaps you feeling less sociable is just that you are thinking a while longer on what to say when spoken to.  That's what I found - I still talk (sometimes much more) but now I put real thought into my words rather than my usual blurtations and self-revelations that come out.  I find that people react to me better and I now have more and better friends than before.

Also remember that as you grow older you will also be changing.  The medication is generally there to help you control your inner thoughts and urges.  Your experiences in life will alter your perceptions and behavior anyway so you will see differences that may or may not be colored by the meds you take.

Glad you are here - you'll be sure to get good advice and sympathetic ears.

Andy >  WE're all glad you found this site also, and we all vent here. In fact some of us need to more than others because it's a safe place to do so when others in our life can't hadle it, don't understand it or don't want to hear it or there is no one to talk to.

Check w/your doc about any side effects of your meds if they bother you for to long.  Hang in there dude.

I hate taking a pill to just stay afloat also.  I am trying some exercises from a book I read.

here is a link to a research paper from Australia that gives good support to this book Stopping ADHD.

I have tried the exercises and they are helping me a lot.  I am not on meds and it has been great.  I can concentrate better, I don't forget things as badly.
