I had this trouble also..I looked up web sites for teaching kids to take pills and found lots of strategies...we started by practicing with little candy sprinkles used in baking then moved up to a larger size....there are lots of different methods out there you just need to do a search and then select what will work but with your child ...it took a while for my little guy to get it but now he can take just about anything. ...the capsuls were the hardest but we learned to use lots of water....son is now 6 years old
tonight was a success!!! last night was hell!!! I took a small glass.....a bit larger than a shot glass and filled it with orance juice....broke open the pill and dissolved it in the orange juice. I told him that once he gulped the juice I would refill his glass with more orange juice and then he could pick out a popcicle as a treat. It worked great and now he's saying he wants to do it that way from here on out!!!
I'm so pleased!
Well, I posted the previous note after a horrible evening of physically forcing our son to take his meds. The next night I think my son realized that the night before was terrible and he didn't want it to happen again. So the next night (last night) we tried again with the capsules. IT WORKED! Here's what we did.
*told him we researched on the computer and found out that lots of other little kids have the same problems and their mommies and daddies don't know what to do.
*told him if he could take it then we could tell everyone else what to do and how to do it
*we read that capsules float so we told him the pill was like a boat. He put the pill in his mouth and then took a big gulp of water. He put his head DOWN a little so the capsule would float to the top of the water then he swallowed. It took 3 tries but on the last one the "boat went down his throat". He was so excited!!!!
*he then asked us to please tell all of the others kids how he did it. He was so proud of himself he made me write his teacher a note today to tell her that he had taken his pill.
So, it can be done and here's your hug!!! Good luck!!!!
I am having the same trouble with my son. We just started Strattera tonight and it was hell for us. It was very frustrating for me. He let the darn thing sit in his mouth so long that he got a good taste of it and next time he wants me to get a little juice and just let him gulp it down. We'll see how it goes tomorrow night. uck. I feel for him. I will try to be more understanding next time. I was a bit hard on him tonight and feel horrible for it.......this is all just so frustrating for me...and him I'm sure.
I need a hug.
