is that the same as serial monogamy?

Ouch.  "Addictions" sounds so pathological.  Can't we call them "passions?"
Uhhhhh.  Sure.  It does sound much nicer to say "Elvis, Jim Morrison and John Belushi passed away after their life long passion for drugs."

I don't like cereal, but I've had my phases, too.

Twix, snickers, weight watchers's smart one cheese cakes, peanut butter, miso soup, chocolate, M&Ms, and the most recent hershey's bars - the ones with milk chocolate and toffee and almonds. It's divine. I cannot understand how I could ever eat those M&Ms... Even though it was only a month ago. (And no, I'm not 300 lbs! :-))

I also go in phases on other things such as book topics, excercise. Last time I moved I had 16 boxes of books, most unread. I am totally into some topic, such as yoga and I buy all these books about it and then, before I read any, or most of them my interest changes to some other topic (right now books on ADD. I actually intend to read these). This is a pretty expensive hobby as you can imagine so I'm trying to utilize the library as much as I can. The library ladies must think I'm crazy. Anybody out there like this about your books? Please tell me I'm not the only one....

With excercise, I did racquetball for quite some time, then on to yoga, then mountain biking and right now weight training. Although I find it so hard to fit exercise in..  Most people get up at 5 and do it but I just don't do mornings well...

Well, Pilgrims,

To make a long story longer, I'll keep it short.

m'I, as an ADer, ADDictive? YES !!! Resoundingly so.

However, once an ADDiction has runs its of course with me, I switch.

Like an Chameleon. So, I go from one addiction to another, sequentially, rather than concurrently.

Once up, on a time, I WAS addicted to cereals, and it was all I would practically eat. I'd put fruit in cereal, then cereal in fruit, then cereal in pancakes, and mix my cereals, etc. MY abxxxolute fave remains Tony's Stuff with Flames.

Seedless grapes, that is... Actually, Flames are great in vanilla ice creaam, too.

So to conclude, I'm a serial cereal ADDict.

Some other ADDictions: Drugs, alcohol, food, sex, tv, the 49ers, the Giants, skiing, SAR, writing, working, driving, etc. Know where my ADDiction is expressing its elf now?

        Yes-I can see it now . . .

ditto for me davie boywonder.. a classical example was my fixation with australian made m&ms.. i ate and ate and ate them.. now i have switched..
i do that with everything.. its not personal, it just happens..

in retrospect, its sad..
Wow is this a weird ADD thing? My hubby is VERY compulsive with foods--one year it was juice popsicles--he would eat like 6 in a row every night, one year it was blueberries--one or 2 boxes every night, this summer--ice cream. When he goes on these kicks, he eats"the" food in large volumes, day after day. He is not big or ever had weight issues. But we have gone round and round about these obsessions. It seems really unhealthy, not to mention it gets VERY expensive! Is this like an OCD component of ADD??I'm going through a Double stuff Oreo faze, two weeks ago it was Ice cream sandwiches. Last year I was polishing my nails every day changing color. My finger nails got so brittle I had to stop doing ityes, I love Cherrios. Totaly addicted to it. oh i don't like to consider my addictions as being ocd!!

the thought sends shivers up my spine
CC, OMG! I just snorted a cherrio...!
seriously, I still have stuff in my cabinets from food kicks that I was on at one time or another. Eventualy my husband will eat it. Although I must say he is very non add and is worse than me.  It is so hard to shop because I get something that he liked last week and this week he is tired of it.  The one constant in my life Taco Bell Well, ragull (is that like a Cgull?), now that you mention berries, I used to pork on grapes. Washed or not. In the field or in the fridge.  White or red. Fresh or spoiled. I'd eat them like corn on the cob. Love them!

Well, doublesuff, that sounds delish! I want some tamaraw now! Is that like sushi?

Anybody eat cereal with something other than milk?

I eat it with a spoon.
I eat it dry, I buy the multi-packs (the mini boxes). Sometimes thats breakfast on the way to work I'v gotten better about this, but sometimes I will still do this.  I will eat my food in sections.  For example: meat , green beans, mashed potoates. I will eat all the potatoes, then all the meat, and then all the beans.  Used to drive my mom nuts as a child.  Oh, and two food CANNOT touch each other. If the potatoes get into the beans a little bit, I won't eat thoes beans.

I eat popscile. Every day. and twice on the week end. I eat 4 at a time. The kind I like come in orange, purple and pink. And I have to eat them in that sequence. Orange first than purple than pink. But I can't eat the same color back to back.

So because I eat 4 and there is 3 colors I have to eat them in a specifiq sequence. Orange purple orange pink, Purple orange purple pink, etc.

This as been going on for 6 years. I guess I stick to some of my addiction.

let's see, there was the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup streak, then M&Ms, then Mars Bars, then Milky Way, and now it is fudgecycles. Those were the biggies but I have had the same prob with nutritious foods.

The only addiction I have had which just won't go away is smoking. That is the one I really want to get rid of!

Glen I don't agree completly. I don't like change in my food. But I thrive highly on any other changes. Change in my job gets me excited. I have to move to a new house next month and I am all over it. Planning, scheduling. It gets me going. Change in the bedroom also...
That varies a great deal I've seen.  Some ADHD'ers seem to thrive on some controlled variation - adrenaline makers mostly.  Excitement - but where they are at the helm. Others (like me) tend to shy from adrenaline.  It personally makes me ill and causes great discomfort.  But variation in it's form and shape right?

I think the main key is control.  We all want to control the things around us - and to not be able to causes great discomfort - agreed?

But yes, you're right many don't get the anxiety I do.  But many do!

Good points - well done!
My thing of late is peanut butter and jelly stirred up . Im a 37 yr old mom but thats what Ive been craving... (no way pregnant either lol)
Hey Lynn,

When you start stirring it with a pickle (no, not that kind!), that's when you know your pg. lol

chocolate and peanut butter??
really??
seriously??

ok!!  how do i do that though?? melt chocolate and pour it over peanut butter?? is that the done thing??
i now know why so many americans are addicted to peanut butter.. i went with my american sister-in-law to the american shop and i bought some peanut butter..
golly gosh, it was incredible.. we polished off the jar in 2 days!!
Brookelea, you have got to try it with chocolate! Yummmm!!!!!!!!!!

These are a few of my favorite thing . . .

Peanutbutter on toast, with slices on banana.  Sun Chips, right now just the regular ones.  I will eat them 'till I almost get sick. Don't forget applesauce mixed with cottage cheese.  Chocolate + peanutbutter, just get the chocolate in the squeeze bottle, and let your imagination run wild.  Granola and yogart, anything but plain.  Last but not least, coffee ice cream and ginger ale.

When I was little (which was what, like, two days ago?) I used to eat my waffles tiny square by tiny square.  It was utterly delicious.

I also keep moving out of my berry berry kix addicition.  Sometimes, they are so delicious, but then I find myself with two full boxes, and not urge to eat them...

I definately agree with the food touch food thing.  My dad eats peas with his mashed potatoes... it makes me want to leave the table.

Brookelea, just dip your favorite chocolate bar in peanut butter like you were eating chips and dip.

Kids love peanut butter on celery sticks with raisins stuck on. We call it bugs on a log.

I know you are going to think this is gross, but here goes.  I eat peanut butter mixed with pancake/waffle syrup.  My father did it and I guess that's where I get if from.  This completely grosses out my dh. crazychick, thats no more gross than peanut butter with jam (jelly for your ppl!!)

barb, shall try the dipping.. danke!!
kitkat have just released a peanut butter version.. i must try it..
Its no different than peanut butter and jelly or jam. Peanut butter was invented to complement sweets. I'm sure of it. If it wasn't, then GWC lucked out when he created it.you think so??  just the thought of mixing peanut butter with jelly (!!) makes me ill..

if america is to remain a superpower, tastes must be changed!!

Hey, Barb, it's easy quitting smoking! I quit 20 times!

Or try this, think of your grandchildren with your exhaust in their respirators...

peanut butter and jalapenos!
That's it.  I'm signing off to go throw up..................
I hesitate to call it an addiction what you've described.  It all comes down to anxiety from change doesn't it??

We all strive to avoid change and the anxiety from it.  Flavors and food in general also constitute change right?

I tend still to favor what I know in food over what I don't .  That leads me to eat the same food over and over too.  It's more like "well I know how this tastes so it comforts me" - over "I MUST have this!!! can't help it!!".  It's comfort zone things and that's the way I see it.  Same with TV, music, environment.  What is different makes us scared so stay where you are.

Or that's how it seems to me - we are all driven so much by the anxiety of change.

well if you wanna get that technical than it is like eating aphrodesiacs ( no i spelled it wrong sorry)

sometimes i make my husband eat those....he he

peanut butter and jalapenos!

it's funny, i just posted on another thread about food kicks.

it's different than addiction. addiction refers to a specific substance or behaviour that gets those endorphins etc. flowing.

it seems what we do is a type of compulsive behaviour, or even a fetish like behaviour. it's more in the act of repeating the behaviour to calm ourselves, than the substance itself.

i believe i do this to manufacture some regularity in my behaviour,as everything else in my brain is constantly changing. it kind of anchors me. but, getting bored easily, it frequently has to be replaced with a new anchor, as our brains tug relentlessly on the line until we break free, and are drifting again.

Not with food, just addicted to interests. Go into withdrawls if I can't get access to them or perform them regularly. The pdoc says its more likely related to my seratonin imbalance (obsessive compulsions) in addition to the natural ADD need for stimulation.

Its caused some very real relationship problems because of it as it really does become an all encompassing mental, emotional and physical thing. Meds help sometimes, but occasionally they actually cause more issues as the stimulants reinforce the focused obsessive behavior.
