I am just curious. Does anyone else have a huge collection of self-help books and tapes?
I have gone from Dale Carnegie to Stephen Covey to Anthony Robbins to the Dali Lama. For so many years I felt sure I was not living up to my potential. Of course I did not know I had ADD so I kept trying to figure out a formula for success.
Look out in the forum, Barb just had a new section opened for people to add book listings there along with reviews!Myself, the only real self help book I ever read was taking up learning handwriting analysis - to learn more about myself objectively.
I was really wondering if many other ADDers have gone through the self-help grist mill trying dozens of different programs like I have to try to "fix" myself?
Chaz-
I went through the same thing! I too have some Dali Lama books, Meditation books, relationship help books, creating a better life for yourself books, and how to get better self esteem books. But when I was finally diagnosed, the "AH-HA!" feeling confirmed it that these were not my problems. None of the books really seemed to be hitting the nail on the head, now I know why! I must confess I even turned to a Dr. Phil book in a moment of desperation!!!
I realize that I don't need those now... I just need a maid and a secretary!
LOL - A maid and a secretary! No kidding.
I had one of these tape programs that was a 30-day program. I thought I would listen in the car every morning on my way to work. Day one had a lesson then something that I was supposed to do 3 times a day for the next 7 days. Then on day two, there was a lesson and an assignment that I was supposed to do every night before I went to bed for the next ten days (while still on day 2 of the 3X a day 7-day assignment). Day three had another assignment that I was supposed to do twice a day for the following 10-days, etc. By day 5 I was so confused and frustrated I stuck the tapes in a closet and decided to just remain a failure.
If I had been organized enough to follow all the instructions on these tapes, I would not have needed the tapes to start with!
