Healing ADD | ADHD Information

I am about halfway through this book by Dr. Daniel Amen.  I am quite intrigued.  Has anyone had one of these SPECT scans?  It seems he has a balanced cross between nutritional, medicinal and behavioral approaches.  I am really interested in what I am reading and would love to hear what others have to say about itNote that Thom Hartmann has a very different book by the same title.

Re Amen's book:  fascinating!  I don't want a brain scan because it involves taking radioactive stuff, but the information he presents is very interesting.  He points out that many ADD people have scars on their faces -- indicating possible brain damage at some time in the past.  I have two scars on my face from childhood.   I agree with his point that much of our personalities/conditions is related to brain damage from head injuries.

I like the questionnaire in the book which pins down which type of ADD a person has and points you to the right type of treatment (both medical and alternative) for that type.  You don't need to take a brain scan -- you can benefit from his experience based on brain scans by taking this questionnaire about your personality.

Interestingly, the stuff he recommended for the type I tested out as turned out to be what I was doing already.  For example, I think he suggested neurofeedback for my type, and I'm already doing that (though not often enough).

ladybentley,

has your son ever had an mri or cat scan or whatever they're calling it these days? (brain scan)

if it was an injury, there would probably be noticable changes/damage to the brain and maybe even scar tissue. (?)

might be something to check into, if you haven't already.

did he ever have seizures?  you know petite mal seizures go unnoticed alot!

he has not ever had a scan.  I havent asked for one because I am not sure it would make any difference.  Much of what I have read indicates that ADHD and TBI are treated in very similar fashions.

this is interesting stuff!  can't wait to get the book!

i've often wondered about the similarities between head injury and adhd.  i am a special education teacher and worked with kids that had head injuries, usually traumatic car accidents but a few severe bicycle or pedestrian accidents.

problems with impulse control, attention difficulties, poor judgement, writing difficulties then the gamet of physical and emotional problems.

there are definitely many problems in common.  are there any studies out there looking into this?  anybody know?  thanks for the info.

My brother in law is also a TBI patient, and I have seen so much of the same symptoms as well!

We dont know if my sons adhd is actually brain damage.  He fell from a changing table as a baby, no real signs of problems - just cried awhile and seemed fine from there - but after reading this book I have wondered ALOT.
