An interesting tidbit... | ADHD Information

thanks for the info shakes..

my dd, who rarely takes meds, sleeps and eats better with ritalin.. it also helps her focus better..

i'm still looking for the perfect alternative to ritalin as i don't like her taking it..  she takes it only when there is a lot of concentration needed at school..  which doesn't seem to happen often

Just a fun fact I recently learned...

Some docs (my own included) tend to lump all the stimulants together because they have similar mechanisms of action and similar side effects. But recent studies indicate that only about 30% of patients are responders to both methylphenidate and amphetamine. The remaining 70% are likely to respond to only one or the other! That's why it's often valuable to do a trial of each to see which works best. All in all, roughly 80% (some figures go as high as 90%) of people with ADHD will do well with some form of stimulant medication. Just found that interesting and thought I would share...

I remember when I lost my insurance for a few months and was concerned about the cost of my Adderall. My doc said, "Well let's just do Ritalin... it will do the same thing." WRONG!! What a nightmare that turned out to be...
Hey Shakespeare--that is an interesting tidbit.  So that's why you suggested giving ritalin a shot with my daughter--that would make sense.  By the way, when you are finished med school, do you plan to specialize? Also, since you have the knowledge and caring to help all of us out, plus med school and work, when do you sleeWinkp?
Actually, Scribe, I was thinking of you when I posted this. I debated putting it on that thread, but I thought maybe more people would see it this way.  I plan to specialize in psychiatry. I like crazy people... we seem to have a lot in common.

And I am one of those fortunate people who requires only 4-5 hours of sleep per night. I'm on a two week vacation from work, which is why I've had the time to play on this board so much recently. I have a week left of leisure time... then back to long days!

Shakespeare,

You will have to let us know when you set up practice.  We'll always need a good doc that actually knows the differences in meds!

ryan, i would love to read your detailed indicator by indicator diagram..  i find that we give each other so much support regardless if we rarely see eye to eye..

the process that adults go through in order to be dx can be so different to what children go through..

i'm tired and can't get my thought process in order..

ah i know what i want to type, i just can't

to be continued...

Perhaps we need the benefit of a 3rd Eye? It is up to all of us to ensure we are in control.... Eh?

no ryan, you need the wisdom of the b

Shakespeare,

Thank You for that tidbit, let me know when you are going through "The Toughie". Self-deconstruction and reconstruction. I am attempting it at the moment. I was finally diagnosed July 2004. I have a written, detailed, indicator by indicator diagram of my Personal ADHD. I am living an isolated existence. For personal security reasons i cannot reveal that i have diagnosis. My wife of 25yrs has become very distant, went back to her parents, she stays with me one,two days a week. We have a grown up adhder, son, a Creative, Music. This board and the Irish Board admin allowed me set up have helped to keep me someway grounded. Now you see why i said Thank You for that tidbit.
