I had a really bad scare....i took my meds as normal. problem is i am getting sick with a bad cough so i took cough medicine and i started shaking uncontrollably and my heart rate went up to 148. i called poison control and they said not to mix dextromethorphan HBr with prozac.
i had no idea that could happen....i was so scared and never thought of checking with dr in regards to taking cough meds.
does anyone know of any over the counter couph meds either suppressants or expectorants without this ingrediant?
if so let me know
my heart rate is down to 132. my heart rate should be between 80 and 100 depending on if i am active or not.
i took this cough med almost 2 and a half hours ago
i just wanted to let you all know, so this doesnt happen to any of you....
brig, I got a really bad panic attack (fast heartbeat, out of breath, etc) when I took Nyquil. However, many took it without problems. I don't know about Prozac interacting with dextromethorphan but basically if it's giving you a bad reaction, just dont take it anymore.
Wow, that IS scary! thank you for sharing this.. I would have probably made the same mistake. Here's hoping everything gets back to normal soon!

i called my pharmacist and she said the only cough meds you can take is codeine kind prescribed by dr which i am allergic to codeine. other than that no suppressants, but the only expectorant you can take without the ingredient is plain robitussin with guiafinisin. but to make sure it does not have dextronethorphan...
be ware....my heart rate is still high but going down slowly it is now at 120
the bad part was i had no adult cough meds so i took my kids pediactric cough and cold med. and a lower dose than should of. so everyone be careful

I suggest that before you start or take ANY meds you ask as many questions as you could, including ones involving your situation. Make a list of questions next time you see your doc..for the short term, I suggest you stop taking the cough medicine.

Wow - took a look at the websites on this and it's scary!!
Consider yourself a rare breed - seems that very few people ( a handful) when mixing a group of meds (including dextromethorphan) get seratonin syndrome - a potentially life-threatening illness. Pretty much as you described, it can also come on if you cut prozac cold turkey and are succeptible as you are. So be careful - and wean off if you must but don't just stop prozac!
I guess any meds have potential hazards. From the look of it seratonin syndrome hits a small group of the larger population - but I guess it's better that everyone takes care and avoids the pitfalls.
I hope you are ok now - be well!

Oh brig - I also looked at alternatives - and there aren't many. Even the coricidin I take to avoid heart issues w/ my dexedrine contains DXM in the cough version.
On the good side - they recommend black hot tea/coffee (opens blood passages in lungs, loosens mucous), hot water with 80 percent sugar mix (was study with kids - as good as DXM!), and mint tea. Also recommended lots of plain water, humidfying the air and sometimes getting a bronchodilator from the MD if no other meds work. But sadly - all the over the counters use DXM and Rx's have codeine. Sucks.
