Chewing on anything plastic | ADHD Information

Share
I have ADD. I have 3 friends that have it as weel. We all chew on things that normal people do not. Like pens, water caps, milkjug rings, straws, plastic tags from new clothes and savings cards on key chains. I was just curious if it is ADD thing.i dont know if it an add thing or not....but i dont chew on anything nor have i except the occasional cap that goes on a pen....but rarely though

anything plastic will do..

i don't discriminate

I chew on my hair - uhg - now I've said it in public, but there you have it.  My pychiatrist said that it is not related to my ADD but that it is related to Tourettes syndrom.   I once went in to a hypnotherapist and she relaxed me and I felt terrific!! I didn't mess with my hair for two weeks after.  It was crazy.  Then I'm back to doing it again.

styrofoam cups rule

My daughter chews straws and pen caps.. and she is not ADD.. so it might not be necessarily related....

BTW, I chew the side of my mouth... ewwww.

I'm also the target for some jokes because I chew my  tongue while concentrating..  my Guitar teacher caught me doing it once, thought it was funny too.. I got embarrased and tried not to do it.. found out that I couldnt play without chewing my tongue...

Naw, it's a teething thing. It means your parents frustrated you as a baby when you tried to clamp onto stuff. And now that you're an ADDult, you're venting...

Hey, just kidding. I really in reality don't know. Sorry (o-:

Hey Anni,

Hi, my name is Davidornonaclov,

I'm a closet chewer. I chew on my mustache.

It hurts. But it saves on having to buy razor blades.

I chewed on my hair regularly before my dexedrine.  And my nails, the skin around the nails when they were too short, etc. etc.  also had a thing for pen caps, rubber bands, anything at hand.  Not necessarily Tourettes - but for sure can be OCD.  Many of us with ADHD have OCD as a comorbid disorder.  As well, there's a disorder called pica which is when someone eats normally inedible things - such as plastics, metals and even clay!  Pica often comes with pregnant women and people suffering psych disorder.

Thankfully the chewing is gone for me!  I don't feel the urge unless I'm rattled or stressed to the max.  Even then I can usually spot it now and resist.  It was wierd - I had never had fingernails and never learned to manicure them!  I was at work - needed to put on rubber gloves and my nails cut through 2 pairs.  Now I have a clipping kit and am learning to carefully keep them short.  It's a learning thing and wasn't easy for me.
