i'd stop the meds asap if i was planning to have a family in the near future...

thank u shakespeare

I'm also very fond of :

www.medscape.com

It's an excellent resource for up to date studies on medications.

Adderall is a class C substance in pregnancy... there's not any evidence that it is harmful, but it's use is recommended only if clearly needed. They use that weasley wording, "only if the benefits clearly justify the potential risks." There has been one documented case of malformed baby delivered to a mother who took d-amphetamine during the first trimester. That's pretty consistent to most drugs... seems like that first trimester is the most important time to steer clear of any drug. As paritthead pointed out, a short period of time won't hurt anything, but if there's a possibility of pregnancy it's probably not a bad idea to test every 2 weeks or so. Some things in life just aren't worth risking...

[/QUOTE] please shakespeare dont take this the wrong way...as i think u r highly intellegent and know your sh*t.....but how do you no so much is there a place you search that you ge info from?   and if so would u mind sharing?   i am always looking for new places for rsearch..

keep up the good work.....

Most of the information I share is from class, primarily psychopharmacology. If you ever have a question about a specific drug, your best bet for straight answers is to go to the website and click "Prescribing Information"... that will give you the same information as the info I get from the PDR. Actually, it might even be better because it is updated more frequently. It's a dry read, but it gives answers... shakespeare38633.5031828704I currently take 10mg twice a day of aderral.  It has help enourmously with my concentration and focus. My husband and I want to start a family and I know that I can not be taking the medication when I am pregnant.  I don't want to stop taking it before I have to but since I don't know exactly what day I will become pregnant what would happen if I took the aderall for a few days before I knew I was pregnant?  sorry i really don't know... but i would talk this over with the doctor...good luck...

I doubt if taking Adderall for a few days is going to cause any problems. Think of all the women who get PLASTERED drunk before they find out they're pregnant (I'm not talking about alcoholics who get drunk every day) and they have normal healthy babies. Many women have smoked, drank, taken medication, used other drugs, etc before they found out - but when they DID find out, they quit.

Just to be clear - I'm NOT saying you should continue taking Adderall without any concern for a potential fetus. I'm just saying taking Adderall while pregnant does not absolutely equal a 3-headed baby.

if adderall is like cocaine then it should go in and out of the system fairly quickly i guess  -  but i wouldn't consider staying on it while i was trying to get pregnant.

let's say you do end up with a baby that does have deformities or mental difficulties and even if the doctor's say 'really, it was NOTHING to do with the adderall' it was always going to have these, it is down to an entirely different genetic problem --- you are always gonna wonder and kinda feel that guilt (or at least i would).

and think why didn't i just stop.

was it really worth it?  for a few extra weeks on adderall to have a child who will never be able to leave home, who will be disabled all his or her life (you know that's the kind of guilt that would hang around my neck - badly)...  i am sure it is not even possible but i couldn't chance it.  i just couldn't.  no matter what.

then again - if you are feeling so stressed being OFF the adderall that in itself might cause problems.  who knows?

i would go off it.  right now if you want to start a family.  hopefully deal with any physical stress/tiredness/semi-withdrawal before you are pregnant.  because being pregnant in itself can be fairly exhausting for some mums-to-be (others go all glowy and full of health).

but my sister was sick as dog for the  first three months.  she absolutely hated being pregnant.  she felt tired, nauseous, teary, miserable and all the rest.  so that, on top of suddenly stopping the adderall --- hmmmm no, i'd stop it now.

It says

Pregnancy:
...
A number of studies in rodents indicate that prenatal or early postnatal exposure 10 amphetamine (d- or d,l-), at doses similar to those used clinically, can result in long-term neurochemical and behavioral alterations.

Reported behavioral effects include learning and memory deficits, altered locomotor activity, and changes in sexual function.

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women.

There has been on e report of severe congenital bony deformity, tracheo-esophageal fistula, and anal atresia (vater association) i n a baby born to a woman who took dextroampnetamine sulfate with louastatin during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Amphetamines should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.

Nonteralopenic Effects: Infants born to mothers dependent on amphetamines have an increased risk of premature delivery and low birth weight. Also, these infants may experience symptoms of withdrawal as demonstrated by dysphoria, including agitation, and significant lassitude.

Usage in Nursing Mothers: Amphetamines are excreted in human milk. Mother s taking amphetamines should be advised to refrain from nursing.

The rule as always has to be benefits versus risks. Dexedrine et al is serious medicine - and if it's not needed to keep one from going over the edge - the baby should take precedent.  Saying that - there is very little in the documentation saying it's dangerous to any extent - just some lab rat tests which cannot always translate into human results.  Take red food dye tests in the sixties that turned out to have no real relevance - same as saccharine.

I would go with - if it's not totally necessary - drop it.  With the added hormones and stress of pregnancy it's not going to work well for most anyway.  But it is something that should be decided by checking around for an OB/GYN that has experience in amphetamines in a pregnancy setting. They ARE out there - you have to ask the right questions.

A place for everything - and everything in its place.  That's the best way.

I was wondering if Anyone got pregnant while taking Adderall, and how that turned out.

I need to take it to manage, but want to get pregnant. I will stop as soon as I know i am PG, but will that first 2 weeks after fertilization damage the baby?  I know tons of people must have been on meds and quit as soon as they found out they were pregnant.  I have really been suffering living in a Fog without my meds JUSt in case I get pregnant. I want my meds, but I don't want to damage or miscarry any pregnancies.

Has anyone had any trouble or know any studies that show decreased fertility or other issues that interfere with conceiving? I Know its ideal to not be on anything while trying to get PG, but in the real world, everything cannot be ideal, and plenty of people doing terribly unhealthy things get pregnant and have healthy babies.

I really want to hear from ADHD women who have had babies, anyone who was on meds before they found out they were pregnant.

Thanks,
