zgirl29172,
If your child acts worse and hallucinates on stimulants, there's a good chance you're not looking at ADHD. Even though you seem to have faith in your doctor, I'd get a second opinion ASAP from a good child psychiatrist and then a neuropsychologist. Your child already has a red flag -- drug-abusing parents -- for various childhood disorders. You owe it to him to find out exactly what is going on before you give him meds that could be doing more harm than good.
Here is a warning from the National Institute of Mental Health:
A Cautionary NoteEffective treatment depends on appropriate diagnosis of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. There is some evidence that using antidepressant medication to treat depression in a person who has bipolar disorder may induce manic symptoms if it is taken without a mood stabilizer. In addition, using stimulant medications to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or ADHD-like symptoms in a child with bipolar disorder may worsen manic symptoms. While it can be hard to determine which young patients will become manic, there is a greater likelihood among children and adolescents who have a family history of bipolar disorder. If manic symptoms develop or markedly worsen during antidepressant or stimulant use, a physician should be consulted immediately, and diagnosis and treatment for bipolar disorder should be considered.
My grand-daughter takes 20 mgs as soon as breakfast is done and then takes another at lunchtime but only on school days. She takes nothing on weekends. She is 10 and about 62 lbs. She has been on this since last year (but off for the entire summer) and has been doing well on it.
My 3 yr was very bad on the medadate cd10(VERY IRRITABLE, NO SLEEP) then we tried focaline and he started to hallucinate. Now we are trying dexdramine.
Our Dr. is the Asst. Professor for USC medicines in Columbia, SC.
but i sure hope and pray something helps my son.He is our foster child who
we hope to adopt but both parents were excessive drug addicts.
My son is 5 and is 43lbs. He began metadate cd 10mgs. 3 days ago. So far he seems to be behaving worse than he was. Very impulsive and talkative all the time. His doctor says to give it a week . Hopefully things will get better. I am very concerned with all of the problems he is having in school.
maybe you'll have better luck.
does anyone know the dose guideline for this med? my son is a little 6 year old he weighs 38lbs and if this med goes weight. the new dr gave my son this med i think it was 20 and told me if it did'nt work to double the next day,i'm waiting approval from the drugstore of course, but does anyone else have any experience with this good bad or other before i give it to him,he was on concerta 54. the new dr wanted to try this one maybe so he can eat dinner better i don't know. any response is apperciated. joshsmom38632.5765277778Metadate CD is comparable to Ritilan and Concerta as they are all methylphenidate. Metadate is just a reformulation of Ritialn. Stimulant meds are not weigh based as everyone responds differently so its all very individual. There is no good or bad. It all depends on the individual response. Hope this helps
