Sleeping Problems ......... | ADHD Information

Bridget dear - we're just too much alike I guess LOL!  No trouble - I have done it so often now that many times I take a deep breath and refresh the page before I make a posting.  A lot of times I find my thought right there in someone elses' type.  AAAAGHH!! So I mumble and grumble and go "well, maybe I would have said it better"... then I laugh at my attitude and smile and cheer you guys on.

sounds like a two edge sword....

you may need to force yourself to wake up earlier and take the adderall..  i have severe insomnia and find that i can fall asleep easier if i'm watching tv...

you don't want to end up in a position where you become so dependant on meds that you can't function without them...

i wish you all the best in finding a solution to your problem....

KIMBERLY

ambien is a prescribed med u have to get for your dr....they usually start with 10mg....but you can only take it if u no u will be able to get atleast 7-8 hours of sleep....it takes about 20-30 minutes to kick in.....as most of u can tell if u trued reading my posts last night.....but i cant lay there waiting for it to kick in as my mind goes into worry mode about various things and then i have a panic attack...i was just prescribed it yesterday, but have used it in the past....it works alittle different for everyone as after about a month of taking it for me it has no effect on me at all.

are you on adderall XR?    and what is the dosage?  i might have a nother idea for u.
i totally agree with u...as i havent become dependent on ambien as after a month it has no effect....just the only thing i can take with all the other meds i am on..

Kimberly -

I assume you're taking XR since you aren't supposed to take after 9AM (it's 12 hour approx so that makes sense).  I usually recommend to people to try the XR when on SR - but maybe it would be better for you to try a shorter running med?  Maybe if you don't have trouble remembering to take it - you can try SR and see if you can divide the day up into more manageable chunks.

If you get on SR - then you might be able to take the last dose when you still need it and then get some sleep.  For me - sleep usually isn't an issue (though I do have weeks where it is - I work rotating shifts).  I find that my job working in a factory is laborious enough that I tend to drain my batteries by day's end and I sleep like the dead.  Not always - day shift and midnights can be a bit hard when I want to do things in the real world.

Don't be too concerned if you need ambien.  It's no more addictive than adderal if you take it as prescribed.  As it's been posted here - make sure you give yourself enough time to get a full 8 hours rest or it won't work right.  It can make you feel awful when you wake if you don't get 8 hours I'm told.  Much like a zombie.

Good luck!

is there a way instead of taking adderall xr you can take the same doseage but split it up as it is in and outta your system faster.....then if you dont get up in time you can always skip ur last dose so u can sleep....but depending what all meds u r on make sure u check b4 taking anything otc as i cant....if u want to pm me feel free to do so and i will be more than happy to help out as much as i can...
didnt see your post as you explained it better than mine....i agree with u glen..we must of typed at the same time...lol

Good luck. Keep experimenting if you're not satisfied. But give them all a fair shake.

I started taking Adderall two weeks ago and I cannot get to sleep before 2am...I know I'm not supposed to take it after 9am but sometimes I haven't been waking up till then cause I can't get to sleep early enough !!     It has turned into a viscious cycle....

I have always had problems falling to sleep and staying asleep, especially now since my DH snores like a Freight Train.....He is on a CPAP machine, which I did get used to and was able to sleep oK with it..it actually acts like a "white" noise...so everything goes OK  and then my DH has surgery and doesn't use his machine for a while and now says he just can't get used to it this time....so his doc changed his mask, which fits his face better, but causes a "whistling" noise....ARGGHHH....I can NOT sleep through that..no matter how I try.....So I always end up getting up and sleeping on the couch.....'cause the longer I lay in bed, the more irritated I get and then I definitely won't sleep.....so sometimes I'll take a benadryl around 9 and that helps, but then I can't wake up in the morning..it's like i have to use toothpicks to hold my eyes open......I've also used earplugs. That is really weird feeling ..I got used to them and used them every night for a couple of months ...but now I have to rely on an alarm clock to wake me up in time to get DD to school,,and I know I won't hear the clock with the 'plugs in.....and after a while, my ears start getting very tender....

Do you all think some Ambien would help, and if I do take it, will I be able to wake up in the mornings, unlike that benadryl haze that lasts forever...

I just hate to take a pill to wake up,,,Take a pill to go to sleep....but I've got to do something ......I bet I've logged 50 hours on the comuter this week...that is wayyyy   more than I usually do..but there's never anything on TV....so I sit here......

Thanks !!!!   Kimberly

Hey Kimberly,

You'll get used to it. You trade off one benefit for a side effect. Then ya take a med for the side effect. Effexor was so good, but I had to take 3 meds to counter it's side effects. Now I'm on Cymbalta, which doesn't have any, except I do feel a hangover in the morning. I'm gonna talk to dalk a/b that next week.

My viscious cycle includes these silly posts. I'm addicted to them. I think's it's whatever chemical is released in my brain when I laugh. I've never laughed so much daily in my life. And so many days in a row.

A long time ago, doc prescribed ambien. I've taken it every day now for at least 4 or 5 years. It's a part of my life. Just recently I learned I can have fun with it, too. By trying to stay awake on it. It doesn't leave a hangover, like other sleep aids. And it's the quickest acting, and soonest leaving. Like all other head meds, you'll just have to find a balance for your needs. Once there, life's great.

Best wishes,

D

Hey KibblesnSherry,

I had to read that three times b4 I got it!!! You get drunk late at night, eh? hehe

...and coffee didn't help sober you up....

ummm yeah, those passive voice sentences arent too clear at times are they?

Actually Alcohol is a whole different ballgame while on stimulants...  I was told that If I wanted to drink a glass or two of wine, I could.. However, I found that drinking any kind of alcohol increases the stimulant effect -- I am FULL of energy with only one glass.. and unable to sleep the rest of the nigh... so for me -- i've gone cold turkey.  no more getting drunk at night.... sigh what a trade off LOL

I think you understood what I meant, but just in case -- If I drink caffiene late at night, the caffiene does not affect me, and I sleep just fine..

Hey ...Thanks for the replies.. I don't know who to answer first.....Brig - I am on Adderall XR 30mg. I try to  take it before 8:30, but starting Monday I'll be getting up earlier so maybe I can take it at 6:30...(my DD has been out of school for Fall Break the past 2 weeks so I only have to get up and make DH"s lunch at 5:30 am and then I go sit on the couch and before I think to  take my meds I end up falling back to sleep...oops....)

Thanks Brooklea.....I just want to be "normal"..(sleepwise that is )

Yes, maybe if things don't get better next week, I can  see if If doc will switch to SR  2x per day..good idea ....

Kibbles .....I try my best to get to bed before him, which sometimes I do...and sometimes I sleep great, all night long ..no problems at all..until about 4 am when he hits his deep sleep snoring....like he's sucking the walls in !! haha...and even then sometimes I'll go right back to sleep.....but other times he'll come to bed and I'll wake right up and not be able to go back to sleep, and then he'll start...and I know I just lay there and toss 'n turn and he ends up getting mad at me because I wake HIM up by tossing and turning !!!  (he USED to, anyway, until I finally told him he was the one keeping ME awake..lol) and every little noise wakes me up. Our son who is 18 comes in all hours of the night, and has been repeatedly told to be quiet will come in and go to the bathroom, his bedroom, back to the kitchen to the fridge, grab a coke,  back to his BR...and I am laying there gritting my teeth wanting to yell at him to be QUIET !!!  but I know a lot of it is my hyper sensitivity to noise, period...I hate it when the TV is louder than a moderate level....I don't like the radio in the car too loud..(anymore..haha..I used to like it LOUD!! ).....and occasionally I still do turn it way up....I'm not OLD !!!   ANYWAY.........and, yes, coffee wakes me up ..I cannot drink it or coke or tea or ANYTHING with lots of sugar or caffeine in it after 6:00 pm....I finally learned my lesson...but about the benadryl thing..this is weird......If I take one benadryl capsule, it will speed me up for a couple of hours...but then I'll get moderately sleepy, enough to relax..but then about 8 hours later, I'll be REALLY sleepy......(the fog-like feeling......like when I have to make hubby's lunch I will often forget things that I was supposed to put in there and later on in the day I woun't even remember making it)..........

sorry to ramble on ..all of this has me baffled....maybe next week I can get all straightened out and nearly normal ..haha..thanks guys.....

Brig - You said there may be something else I could try??  I'll pm yoou. or you pm me, either one...thanks....BTW- I've tried Melatonin..It worked OK, but made me dream a LOT...really wild, vivid dreams....not bad, but I didn't feel like I "rested" ,..ya know..I would try it again , though......Thanks !! Kimberly

Slugbug,

Is there any way you can get to bed before your hubby does?  I have to do this so that I can sleep. Mine also snores like a freight train... OMG it sounds like the roof is shaking!!!  But, I sleep so soundly that if I can get to bed before he does, I get a good night's sleep. If he beats me, I am dooomed to a night of insomnia..

Of course getting to sleep that first night can be a problem when you are still awake from the adderall... are you getting a long enough nights sleep on the benedryl? I didnt realize that one would be ina fog from it in the morning.. Its never happened to me, but then again , coffee never kept me awake when drunk late at night either
