impulse control | ADHD Information

Wow - bloom.  At your dose it should be working wonderfully!  Do you take a "time out" during say summer break or a week or two here and there?  I do - when you take some time away from meds it comes back as strong as when you first took it - and you avoid having to keep upping it.

You should get your parents/guardians to get you to a person skilled in ADHD in kids and adults (you're almost an adult and most children lose the ADHD by age 12) and get an opinion on what to take and how much.

Upping a med that keeps going down in potency is a recipe for addiction.  You should be able to hit a level plateau and stay there for months - not such short times.  Please get your parents to get you more experienced help!

Is it possible your Adderall dose is too high? If you go beyond the therapeutic dosing range, whatever that may be for you, Adderall and other stims can actually exacerbate ADHD rather than treat it. That may not be the case for you at all, it's just a thought...adhd and possible depressionWhat exactly is your diagnosis? ADHD, clearly, and what else? Anxiety, depression, etc. Prozac can be prescribed for both those conditions as well as others...

I don't think my first post was clear.  I was taking 30mg 3times a day, and I did well in school with it.  But when I switched to XR, the doctor only gave me 60mg instead of 90 mg.  Although 60mg XR is fine for me in the summer, I can not function well in school because I can't focus or pay attention.  I forget everything.  I am so frustrated because I know I need to pay attention better, but I just can't.  There is a big difference in the focus required at home during the summer (watching tv and chilling with friends/family at the beach) and what is required in classes all day in a large high school!  I did well on the 90 mg last school year, just never helped with impulse control as much as it seems with others.  I will live that over this!  I am just saying that it is not like 60mg was working and then quit.  When I switched to XR, the doctor told me I should be getting 90mg but she didn't want to go that high and only gave me 60 instead.  So, I am thinking that maybe in the summers I can drop to 60mg but for school, I definitely need the 90mg.

Yes, I have tried to go off of it in the summer, and I just can't function.  My doctor told me it is very important for me to never miss a dose.  She said that some people can take holidays and others cannot.  I already talked to the doctor about the possibility of "outgrowing" adhd.  She told me that some kids do appear to outgrow it, or sometimes they have just learned how to cope better with it, but often times, it reappears in adulthood in the form of poor finances, holding down a job, etc.  Sometimes overspending may be the only symptom left of adhd.  Not everyone is so lucky.  One of the books I read said that the people who appear to outgrow adhd are usually those more mildly afflicted.  That is definitely not the case with me.

I am already seeing adhd specialists.  My doctor also explained to me that the amount of medication required for each person has nothing to do with the severity of the condition.  (I am severe adhd, though).  She explained that one person with severe adhd may be able to get by wonderfully with 5 mg of Ritalin while a milder person may require a much higher dose.  It all depends on the person's metabolism.  I do have a very high metabolism.  I eat like a pig and don't gain weight.  The medication does not affect my appetite like it does in some people.  I have also had my thyroid and blood sugar checked.  It is all normal.

I was just wondering if anyone else had issues with impulse control while on the medications or if anyone else had the issues with requiring higher doses like me and what medications they switched to.

I am 15 years old and have taken Ritalin, Adderall, and Adderall XR.  I am currently taking 60mg Adderall XR and 20mg Prozac.  I was taking 30mg Adderall 3Xday but I didn't want to take any medicine during school so we switched to XR.  The new doctor didn't want to give me 90 mg though. (My old doctor retired and I now see the doctor that took his place.) I always require high dosages of medicine for it to help me with paying attention and hyperactivity.  None of them have ever really helped me with impulsiveness though. I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem that I have???

When I started Adderall XR 30 mg twice a day I saw a huge difference in impulse control and I also stop biting my nails.  Having been taking it for 3 months now I have notice some of the impulsiveness sneaking back in but I am much better.
