no good morning sunshineConcerta only takes about 30 minutes to kick in. I'm not sure why you're giving him anything earlier when you could just give him the Concerta earlier. In addition, I'm not sure if you need a higher dosage, but you haven't maxed out because you can always combine an 18 mg with a 54 mg capsule to get a 72 mg dose. I honestly don't like the idea of your taking the responsibility of medicating your own son. If it's so complicated to medicate him properly, I would strongly encourage you to seek the advice of a very good child psychiatrist to give you good information and prescribe your son's meds. You may find you will get a lot better result that way.
Welcome! Have you considered switching his meds? Can you give him Concerta any earlier than 8 am? My 12-year-old ADHD son was on Concerta for 1.5 years. He decided he wanted off of it last February because it was making him feel flat and inhibited. My son is now on Focalin XR, which he likes better because it allows him to concentrate without taking away his spontaneity. (Focalin is a refined version of Ritalin that is supposed to cause fewer side effects.) Focalin XR lasts about 8 hours, whereas Concerta lasts about 12 hours (although it seems to be lasting longer than that in your son). In addition, Focalin does not seem to be affecting my son's appetite as much as Concerta did. He has put on about 10 pounds since last spring. We have switched his meds a few times. He has been on the concerta for a couple of years, it seems to be our only option and we have maxed out the doseage. I'm not sure if Focalin is available in Canada. He takes 5mg of PMS-Methylphenidate before the concerta to bridge the gap until the concerta kicks in. He usually has about two hours of homework at night, which has to start at 4:00 when he gets home from school, hockey games or practice in the winter some nights and Little League in the spring and summer. Medicating him can be very complicated, and we are basically doing it ourselves. Doc just prescribes it, and we decide when to give it to him. I would love him to put on 10 pounds! |
