My son is having focusing problems and difficulty concentrating in school and home. He has been throught every sport in town and can't seem to stay with one. He has angry outbursts and can't seem to control his anger sometimes. The Special Ed. Dept at his school, which he is a member of, sent us for an eval by a neurologist today, they suggested concerta. I am agianst drugs for children at 8 years old. Wgat are some other options anyone else has heard of, and where can we go from here, I would welcome any advice.Go look on the Alternatives Board. It is all about the natural approach to ADHD. thank youYou can try the exercises in the book Stopping ADHD. They have really helped me. I am doing very well with memory, organization, concentrationg, etc. since I have been doing these exercises. They take a while, you have to be dedicated to trying for more than just a couple of times. But it is well worth the effort (At least it has been for me)
I am not on medication right now and I feel like the exercises have made a huge difference.
I'm so sick of people coming on who don't have or have children with ADHD/ADD, Trying to tell us how to live our lives or raise our children.

Sorry, no resemblence, in chemical structure, nor pharmacology, of methylphenidate, ecgonine methyl ester benzoate, or the latter's metabolite, benzoylecgonine.
Their only similarity may be an effect on serotonin reuptake through inhibition of the serotonin transport system. However, this is only postulated at this time. There are three other areas where cocaine is significantly different: it's influence on norepinephrine reuptake, serotonin reuptake, and sodium channelling. Any combination of the four different modes of action has a logarithmic increase in the complexity of activity in the cerebral environment.
That ecgonine methyl ester benzoate's metabolite, benzoylecgonine, would be similar in structure or activity to methylphenidate is also untenable.

Benzoylecgonine is the major metabolite of cocaine. It is formed by hydrolysis of cocaine in the liver, catalysed by carboxylesterases.
Do not use any medication for your 5 year old!!! This stuff is evil. Just think about it for a minute. Your son's brain is developing and you are are using a methylphenidate(stimulate) to alter is brain chemistry!!!! Leave him alone!!! I know you are trying to do the best for your son. We all want to protect our children. The doctors are wrong! They mean well but they are wrong. They are fed biased information from drug companies! You know in your heart that this is not the right thing to do for your son but you have been fed a bunch of lies (as everyone else that has put their child on adhd meds) that medication is the right thing to do. If your son really does have a problem then look into homeopathic solutions not the drug solution.

Of course they feel obligated to tell you how to live! They are the same kind of people who flocked around Columbine after the massacre - saying that it wasn't the easy access to lethal weapons that caused it but the meds that they were on.
