I am a mother of a 4 year old son. My son is getting too much for anyone in our family to handle. We have explained the situation to our Dr. he just says we can't test him till he is 5 years old. I know this is untrue so how do I go over his head to do this? Make the Dr. take my son home with him for a day?? He'd come home medicated in a hour if I did that!! PLEASE Anyone with any advise HELP!!!

You should be able to find a doctor that will "diagnose" your son and give you the prescription you want.
The youngest person I have ever heard of getting an SSRI antidepressant (Zoloft) was..... a... 1 MONTH OLD BABY !
So, if a doctor will do that, you really should'nt have too much problem finding a "medical professional" to do what you want.
And, just for the record, the youngest person to attempt suicide was actually "persons". It was twin little girls on Zoloft....at... 5 YEARS OLD !!!

I like how balanced uses the most ridiculous claims to back up his fundy ideas. Any doc who would prescribe a psychological med to a baby too young to have formed any symptoms is committing malpractice and that has nothing to do with the med. It is like giving lithium to a baby. You can't blame lithium makers - there's no way they would recommend it to that group at all.

Have you been diagnosed as ADHD and in denial? Have you been diagnosed by a professional, It's obvious that you have motivatioal problems and most likely borderline personality disorder/anti-social/or possibly psychotic. How does it feel to be a socially enept troll? Are you depressed because you cant find any fanatic followers of your misinformed jibberish? I certainly hope you never take anti-depressants because it would lessen your chances of commiting SUICIDE!

This woman simply wanted to have her son diagnosed with ADHD and given a prescription to numb him down a few notches.
All I did was suggest that she keep looking for a doctor to do it.
I'll bet she wouldn't have to go to more than 3 doctors or probably the first psychiatrist to get the diagnose and drug that she wants.
Balanced, She isn't out to drug her son. She is desperately seeking a way to help her son succeed.
You are so concerned about meds affecting our children negativelyl and the risk of death to some. As an adult ADHDer who was undiagnosed and untreated as a child, I tried to choose death myself, more than once. It is not my fault I didn't succeed.
I personally feel that my life was screwed up by parents who didn't see my need and by people who insisted that I live to their standards or be labeled a failure. Had I had access to these meds when I was younger, I could have done something positive with my life. As it is, I basically am just putting in time until I die, trying to help others have success where I have failed.
You are so concerned about the harmful effects of meds, but what you refuse to see is that living with ADHD in a straight thinking world is, for most of us, a life sentence to hell on earth. Yes, as an adult ADHDer, I think the benefits of meds far outweigh the risk.
Even so, I and most of us have tried or are trying to find dietary or other ways of enabling our kids before we will consider meds. Some of us see the situation as so desperate that we will put our kids on meds to get them started but by no means intend to keep them on them.
Having said that, maybe now you can see why your attitude is so inflammatory here. Not only are you implying that we don't love our kids and are seeking an easy way to raise them, you are forcing many of us to remember the pain of our childhoods with ADHD, which we have already done when our kids were diagnosed.
I appreciate the fact that you care enough to warrn us, but you need to understand that there is more to all of this than so called "facts" which you have been fed and often cannot verify. Personally, I resent the attitude you have taken towards us here.

Very likely you didn't have the correct meds for your Dx. (I could be wrong as I don't recall your story) That is what this board is so helpful with stressing the fact that a correct dx is key. I too agree that meds are overprescribed but this is true with nearly every illness. And I agree that ADHD is over diagnosed as well as incorrectly diagnosed. If anyone spend any amount of time on this board reading and REALLY hearing these parents stories they will see it isn't just a kid acting up once in a while. These parents are desperate and most don't know how long they can go on as is.
I believe Balanced has a valid concern but unfortunately isn't looking at all the facts with an unbiased opinion. She or he has one agenda. I too came here thinking it was just a matter of disipline and was very skeptical there was such a thing as ADHD. I AM NOW 100% CONVINCED I WAS DEAD WRONG because I spent the time getting to know the people of this forum.
I greatly resent Balanced tatics and unfactual statements. I too reported Balanced because of one post where he/she stepped over the line. The only thing you are doing here is making people angry. Do you think anyone will listen when they are angry. NOPE.
Oh how I wish I'd been "drugged" as a child! Maybe I wouldn't still be a "sophomore" in college at the age of 33 after going for 13 years!i was drugged as a child.. it wasn't fun..balanced has a point, but so does barb...
i don't think meds are the be all and end all... i think they play one role in a myriad of treatments..
i do think they are overprescribed, especially to young children...
and i think adhd is overdiagnosed...
but i also think that meds can help - ritalin can be beneficial for inattentive adhders..
medicating a child because they play up and misbehave is not what i call 'therapeutic uses'...
