amazing kidsGood for him! It is amazing how they can do somethings without problem but school is out of the question. I know this is a little thing but maybe it is his learning style. Schools only really teach to one learning style. Often people (Adults and Children) can not learn until a certain something in their head is satisfied. Then they can absorb. The learning style that is the hardest for schools to deal with are the why learnings. for them until you can explain why something is the way it is they can not learn the rest of what you are telling them. If by some dumb luck the teacher actually explains why 15 minutes into the lesson, then the child only learns what comes after that they have lost the information provided to them the first 15 minutes. So something to consider when you are working with your child and the school. Like SmallMom says the first step really needs to be diagnosis by a qualified DR. Yesterday my beautiful 11 year old adhd child managed to run in a cross country meet, go to school, do homework, do an hour of dry land training and had an hour of hockey practice all in one day. He had enough focus at 11:00 p.m. last night to say "I love you mom". Isn't it amazing the expectations we and society place on these exceptional children?! Some days I feel like we need so much help coping with med options, getting him to eat and getting to sleep at night. It can be so frustrating! We depend on our family physician for answers. He was first diagnosed at 6 and started taking meds at 7. He originally saw a specialist in pediatric adhd, but the doc didn't even talk to my son, just to us and read the remarks on a report card and said he needs medication. We never saw that doc again. Focalin is not available in Canada, and I'm not sure what the advantages are to increasing his Concerta doseage to 54 + 18 would be. Will it decrease his appetite further? He definately functions with sports, it is school that is a problem. He has always had focus problems which was the reason the teachers diagnosed his adhd. We spend a lot of time at home, teaching him what the teachers don't seem to be able to get through. He works very hard to pass tests and finish assignments on time. I guess I wish we could find a way to make things a little easier for him and to keep peace in the family at homework time. Why would you possibly want to increase his Concerta dose if he did all the activities you cited above in one day? It sure doesn't seem as if he needs it to function because he's more than functioning. To answer your question, yes, a higher Concerta dose wil probably decrease his appetite further.
Teachers are not doctors and definitely NOT qualified to diagnose a complicated neurological disorder like ADHD. I highly recommend you take your son for a full evaluation by a neuropsychologist. He could have a learning disability that makes it difficult for him to do well in school. Lack of focus and inattention are symptoms of many childhood disorders. The reason stimulants may not be helping is that you may be medicating the wrong disorder. There's no way things are going to get better until you have an accurate diagnosis and the proper interventions in place.
