re: alcohol. i just don't very often. could be the alcoholism in the family. could be low tolerance. could be the way i get sick so easily. i have enough headaches and irritibility w/o hangovers. i don't know that i ever 'got' the appeal to that kind of intoxication, or the 'letting loose' so many tout. it never made me feel good, just mildly poisoned.

maybe if i had more self-control to begin with. giving  up more self-control just doesn't feel that much fun. nor do i like the numb face feeling.

LOL, I know what you mean about the numb face feeling

Anytime I have imbibed a bit more than I should I find myself slapping my  own face.. cause it feels funny.. numb.. Too many things to me are way too entertaining!  That stupid alcohol gene is in my family. I've been lucky, so far, anyway..

One of the nice things about being treated for ADD is that I have  lost all taste for the stuff. I have a bottle of wine that has been sitting in the fridge for 3 months now.. I should probably throw it out.

My favorite thing to do now is to drink those Virgin Strawberry diaquris.. hee hee, I get to watch everyone else get loaded, they think that I am too, but noooooooooo  I just let my ADD FLOURISH!!

seeker - try flonase!  I got it from doc for sniffles at work.  It's an allergy nightmare - cardboard dust, wood dust (and mites), seasoning that includes black pepper and jalapenjo (ugh), solvents, perfumes (coworkers - want to throw a couple in the hot oil but I don't).

Flonase has to be daily - but thankfully it's dirt cheap.  With my med insurance it is 8 bucks a month.  It would be about 50 a month without - so it's all good!

No cotton mouth, no nothing!  I do get watery drippy nose when it's cold - but heck small price right!?!
Seeker, I agree on the flonase!!  it works GREAT!  I use it everyday !! I also have to use Clariten though because my ears fill with fluid.. kinda gross when I lean my head to the side.. I can hear the fluid move... ewwww..

Sherry

Seeker - it's well known that we with ADHD often get opposite reaction to stimulants and depressants.  Take kids with ADHD - they take stims - and become slower moving and they tend to react with less energy.  The "zombie" effect is what some call it. I call it slowing down to smell the roses and do your homework! LOL! but I digress...

My family has a oversensitivity to pseudo ephedrine as well.  Might be an ADHD thing - when they take it instead of drowsiness (which is normal) - they get hyper to the nth degree.  Like on triple espressos - my kid sis is the worst she is like me when on cold meds!  Very funny if it wasn't scary too.  I get shaky hands when taking - but I can't take them with my current meds and don't miss them.  I take coricidin when it's bad - and flonase for the rest of the time - just skirt it altogether.

Coffee for us is often a relaxant.  I dont get jitters when drinking oodles of coffee - in fact I find my sleep more restful if I've had a cuppa or a jillion before naptime.

Alcohol - if you have the "addict" gene then it's like candy to a diabetic .  It affects endorphin receptors - basically tiring them out and making them require more and more connections to them to get the same happy feeling.  If you don't have the gene - you can still get that effect but takes a lifetime to do it.  I'm sure you get the whole range of love/hate with alcohol with us as with the general populations - though how much research has been done with alcohol and ADHD is unknown to me.  The gene is on my dad's side for the addiction - but I was saved by a touchy tummy that would have sent me to an early grave if I had kept imbibing.  Glad for that!!

i've had allergies, hayfever as we call it, mostly since i was 11 or 12. i am very sensitive to those medications for it. some give me the jitters. some make me extra spacey. some do both.

problem is, i never know what i'm going to get with those things except cotton-mouth.

yeah, I'm thinking the anxiety could have something to do with it.. seems like I am more anxious off of the metedate and very calm and relaxed on the the medication..

I will still ask about all of this tomorrow on the phone to the  Dr.s office.

The paradox is kind of interesting... a CNS stimulant calms me down, and relaxes me. Whereas a depressant such as , say a single glass of wine, hypes me up... go figure

oh yeah, I bought the BP monitor today.. works pretty good.. got the battery powered one so I didnt have to worry about how to use it manually.. thanks again for all the advice!!
When retiring for the evening, does anyone feel their own pulse?

I will lay there trying to go to sleep and I feel my whole body's pulse. I don't have a pounding heartbeat, per se. just can feel it in my neck and head, It takes awhile for me to settle down because it bothers me to feel it.

BTW, I do great on meds during the day.. its just at night that it  gets me.

I also, on occasion can feel my own heartbeat towards the end of the day as meds are wearing off. I never have a problem while on the medication. wierd ? or something that is common?

sherry
Ha! All this time I thought this was a personal note to someone named Pulse...

Ha! Then I thought you said does anyone take their pulse!!! I do, and take my bp as well.

But, when I finally read it, you thought you said does anyone feel their own pulse...

I do that, too. I can sometimes make the bed jiggle just by beating my heart...

Maybe I got a big heart...

I took a nap today feeling my heart beat with my hand on my chest... I love the rythm of my own heart, too. I do not like the rythm of my own heart's blues...

I think the issue may be high blood pressure? I'm not sure. When I was a kid I slept on a steel bed, and my mom thought I was on drugs, b/c the bed would go lub squeek, lub squeek, lub squeek in time to the beating of my heart.

I can say I don't notice it when on meds, b/c I'm focused on the task at hand. I'll pay attention next time it happens, see if I'm medicated (today's sunday, so no meds), and take my bp. Will that make you happy?
That's interesting about the bipolar... but no, I dont have that. When I was tested by the Psychologist, he went about it by ruling out other things.

I was tested for Bipolar, Anxiety Disorder, depression, multiple personality and mood disorders...

The testing for bipolar showed no evidence of me ever having a manic episode.
Me2, sorta. I'll rearrange some letters, here. Give me a sec. There:

The testing for bipolar showed no evidence of me ever having a depressive episode.

Thanks!

glen- tell me more about reversal of med effects and adhd.

i drank 11 shots of espresso yesterday. the last three just an hour or so before i could not keep my eyes open any longer.

last fall, was taking vicodin for tooth pain (rx'ed by dentist). three days on vicodin, up three days straight.

several yrs. ago, took some crystal meth at a party. (sorry kids- can't say my judgement has ever been very good.) felt "normal". no racing heart. no 'this feels great'. no talking fast, or thinking fast. felt clear and relaxed. had no anxiety, like i usually do in groups of strangers, but wasn't any more extroverted either. everybody else was cranking, and able to drink more. i was like 'is this stuff working?'

that concerta has worked with your son...

in oz we don't have concerta.. there are two choices - ritalin or dexamphetamine..

bad luck for the kids who can't handle either..

KIBBLES HAVE U EVER CHECKED YOUR PULSE TO SEE IF IT IS HIGH?  HAVE U MENTIONED THIS TO YOUR DOCTOR?  I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THIS B4 ON MEDS....AND WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE B4 MEDS....NOT SO BAD NOW THAT I AM ON MEDS AND MY MEDS HAVE KICKED IN....BUT BECAUSE OF PAST PROBLEMS I CHECK BP AND PULSE ALL THE TIME....

MY 6 YEAR OLD HAD HIGH PULSE AND SEIZURES WHEN ON ADDERALL...SINCE WE SWITCHED TO CONCERTA 36 MG xr HE HAS HAD NO PROBLEMS....WHAT MEDS ARE U ON AND WHAT IS YOUR DIAGNOSIS?
Diagnosis: ADHD combined type, mild anxiety disorder ( possibly caffiene induced)

Yep, I've been checking BP off and on.  Before going on meds, my BP at the Dr.s office was 152/85 !!!

I convinced him that it was stress induced ( it was the first week at school and I was trying so hard to be organized and, well, perfect, I thought the problem was related to that.) He perscribed concerta and told me to come back in a month to recheck BP and possibly be treated for the condition.  I then started taking a log of my BP.. During the school day my avg. was 130/80 on medication.

On weekends it has been avg. 107/73... Quite a difference ( and yes this is on medication also.)

BTW, I am on metadate CD 20mgs at 7am then another 10 at 11:30am. Today, I tried taking all 30mgs. at once to see if the medication would last longer than 12:30 on just the 20 alone. It does, but still not long enough for the school day. So I am back to 20 +10 tommorrow. ( I was thinking that the 30mgs might be out of my system before bedtime so I wouldnt get the pulse thingy.)

I'm thinking about actually buying a BP machine to use at home instead of going 2x a day to the nurses office to check it and then to the CVS pharmacy on the weekends. My pulse is usually around 85. That way, also, I can check my pulse when i feel it at night.

I will be asking about this on monday. I just wanted to see what other experiences were.  umm, looks like i'm rambling, better stop here

Thanks Brig!! BTW, went and checked it while I was feeling the pulse thingy tonight.. BP was 106/73 and pulse was 78 --- so its not a rapid pulse feeling - thank goodness at least for that!

I used to, as a child and young person, hear my pulse when I would go to bed.  It was strange.  I don't notice it anymore

HEAR WHAT......I AM KINDA OUTTA IT AND NOT KNOWING WHAT U MEAN...SORRY

the coming down effects of some meds are notorious..  thats one of the two major reasons why i don't take meds...

kibbles00238641.5302199074A LOT of people with ADHD have reversal of med effects.  The alcohol though - have you been checked for bipolar?  It's known that alcohol has a curious effect on bipolar in that it gets them very active and hyper.  My ex has bipolar and any amount of alcohol can get her going - and when she's at her lowest point she can do strange things with even a small amount.  Just curious.

ok, update for anyone who may be interested

Called the Doc. was told as long as my pulse was fine ( 76) that there isnt much of a concern... however, if after another few weeks, if it still bothers me, Or, if I notice a big increas in pulse rate, then I need to come in and let the Dr. Listen to my heart and see if there is anything else to be concerned about.

Anyway, I feel a little better about it.. the nurse did say that my description was a little unusual because I have no other simptoms to go with the feeling..

I'll just bet that I started feeling it, started trying to feel it, got nervous about it, made it worse... Probably making myself worse just by thinking about it.

Sherry

You know.. I have a few premature beats and just being aware of those beats has made me a cardiac neurotic. It's no fun. I do get tachycardia eposides but I am pretty sure it's all related to my anxiety.

I think the pulse sensation (at normal rate and BP) is due to excessive anxiety.

When I started doing the exercise regime, I noticed a significant decrease on pulse sensation.

My BP goes up when I see a doctor. I have a white coat hypertension but when I am at home and not anxious, it's all fine. BUT... if you're anxious all the time, it's no good.

That's all I can say.
