What have you experienced?

I now understand better from your editing & PM what it is you are trying to do.  And while I do not agree that currently there is a problem from the medical field of mis-diagnosing, it was certainly there in the past.  I also completely agree that it is way over medicated.

I wish you luck in your article.

I am frusterated.  I was trying to reach out and let people know about what happened to some of us first generation ADDers.... thirteen years later.  Is there anyway that you will stop trying to interfere with my postings.  I am not a HUGE journalist, I am an independent author who is writing from personal expeience.  I see how my post may have given you that impression. I am sorry.  Would you please amend your responses, I dont want people to be afraid to talk to me.  If you have any questions for me, just ask.

your'e welcome leticia!!

and barb,  it's WAY over-diagnosed.

doesn't mean your child doesn't have adhd, it simply means not every active, loud or misbehaving child is adhd.  why be afraid of exploring this?

we need to question the overuse of the adhd "diagnosis" and maybe find a real solution for our kids.

frankly, medicating them does not really work.  look at all the posts about medicine difficulties parents are having.  yes, for some it works.  for many, it's a nightmare.  like my son's experience.

i'm happy with my decesion to not medicate and look for other solutions.  but, this is only my experience.

kppy

Barb, my feelings exactly.

For once I would like to see an article that explores how ADD/ADHD affects families.  The struggles with meds & natural solutions & the Dr.s that put time & patience into help us.  ANd showing success stories.

How about an article to help the newly diagnosed.  One that explains the meds, natural remedies, the different types of Dr.'s that help, & how the schools can work with you.

Or an article regarding the fact that teachers & aides do not know how to handle our ADD/ADHD children in the classroom, which then leads to even lowered self esteem.

Or, God forbit, an article about all the wonderful things that our children are because they have ADD/ADHD that the other parents will never have with their "normal" children.

Instead this will be yet another article being written which gives our extended families more ammunition to say "you just don't discipline him/her correctly & that is why your child acts the way they do.  Didn't you just see that recent article that says ADD is being over diagnosed."

I have not been diagnosed with ADHD, however I believe I may have it.  My son is diagnosed.  My cousin, Uncle and Grandfather had schizophrenia, my brother has manic depression and my sister - well she is like me but doesnt have a good husband to be her "frontal lobe".  My experience through life has been hard.  I was always seated near the teacher, I went to a convent school and therefore was hit a lot by the nuns, I never made friends, I was good at sports (which was my saving grace).  I grew up made bad relationship choices, had 4 children with 3 men and am now happily married but still very disorganised and tend to rely on my husband to sort everything out.  I am happy most of the time though, but I tend to put my head in the sand as often as possible to save my sanity.  Rae

I am looking for people who have had a personal experience with ADD.

I have ADD myself, but I was diagnosed a long time ago.  Schools werent aware of this problem, and I could only see a neurologist for this.  This is not the case anymore and I would like to know how individuals are experiencing these issues. I am working on putting a book together of personal accounts.  Please share.

Aspiring112638181.4036342593Hi, Kppy.  Thanks for the informative link!  LeticiaMy doctor only gave me a 30 day supply of 60mg a day of Adderall XR and didn't give my sister and their prescription because he thinks that I sold my prescriptions in school because my 6 month supply only lasted 2.5 months because I had to split it with my dad and sister. The Navy prescribed 60mg a day as my dad's starting dosage so that he could stay awake longer, and me and my sister have been on Adderall/Adderall XR for about 7 years and we haven't had a break from our medicine for over 4 years! If I go a day without my medicine or go down a dosage, I literally go psychotic and break everything in sight,  then after that my heart will beat at like 140+bpm and I will feel extremly weak. I took the last pill of my current prescription today and my next appointment is a few weeks from now. I have no other medicines to take besides my daily 1 pill a day Centrum Multi-Vitamin supplement. To make matters worse all the doctors where I live are on vacation!

hi lori,

i'm not sure how much input you'll get here.  you may want to try www.ritalindeath.com.  you'll find many people there with loads of horror stories about doctors, medications and school issues.

good luck with your work.

lori,

i forgot to add go to the discussion board at this site.  it's listed on the left side

Lori, Thank you for editing your post so that we can see you want to write an unbiased article. I do agree that it is over diagnosed and over medicating is an issue. I just don't want to see the public inflamed over the issue so that it is no longet taken seriously. It still isn't, all too often.  Barb

IMac, why bring up a thread that is over 1 1/2 years old and point out the one response that you know will be inflammatory? Let this one drop or the tension and fighting will start all over again.

I think kppy has established the fact that she is not anti med to the extent that the trolls are. You can be anti med without condemning the people who do use them and that is who she is now. She hadn't been here long at that point and was referring people to a site she found helpful for the info she needed to help her child.

Since you weren't here way back then and I was, I would like to point out that the information on this board wasn't nearly as helpful as it is now. This site has improved a lot over what it was then. It was a good site then, but we do have many more people here with experience and knowledge in many areas now. Let them be heard without having to compete with dead threads.

Be glad the site has grown and improved so that people coming here now can get the help they need, and leave the old posts that are likely to stir up controversy where they belong.....buried. Please!

She could answer for herself but since I have known her here for almost 2 years and saw the post first, I defended her. I wanted to say what I said about not dragging up controversy anyway, so I tossed that in while I was at it.

This board is balanced, or was at one time. I think it still is and will stay that way as long as we don't keep bringing up past issues and don't allow trolls to take over.

Frankly, let them come from the ritalindeath site as long as they don't cause problems. Its possible that the posts here will convince some of them that meds do have a place in treating ADHD. They have a right to know the views of people who are pro meds, and of those who feel as I do, that there is a need for meds and a chance for treating people naturally. It doesn't have to be one or the other; its a case of what is best for each individual.

I think we can agree that we want everyone to find what is best for their child. We can't be successful in helping anyone if we are fighting between ourselves rather than seeking and sharing knowledge.

As someone that posted in this original thread I can give some background for Kppy's answer, although I am quite sure she can speak for herself.

The OP's original 1st post to start this thread did not read the way it does now.  Please note it was posted 7/12 7 then edited 7/13.  The OP was looking for horror stories about meds & how so many children were being diagnosed with ADHD/ADD who weren't really ADHD/ADD.  It looked like a 1 sided article saying ADHD didn't exist.  Also, like Barb said, this was a different board then, & the OP's post came in the midst of people posing as writers & collage students looking to do studies & then saying ADHD wasn't real & only sick people medicate their children, or people who didn't wabt to parent their children.  Kppy's answer & redirection an anti-med site that would give the OP plenty of ammo, & it was said tongue in cheek.  More like a  - this is what you are looking or anyway- type of thing.

I do not understand why you brought back a thread from so long ago, but I do not consider this an anti-med board.  I have been a member for a very long time, my son has been on meds for almost 3 years & I consider this board a wealth of info.  I ignore the posts with the trolls, unless I feel like getting my frustrations from the day out!

ogram38745.7437615741I don't have ADHD but my 10 year old son does. I agree that it is way overdiagnosed. I know a lot of people who were told that their kids have ADHD. I am sure that everyone knows someone whose child has been diagnosed. This is crazy! Good luck wiht your article..IMac38946.7869675926

For some reason, some people here want to keep the stress going on this site. They are using this thread to try to do it. Lets not play into their hands.

If you are not looking to keep conflict going, please do not post on this thread. Do not even read it again. That is what the troll who wants to look like a concerned person wants. When she can't get a rise out of anyone and there is no attention, she will let it die and go back where it belongs.

.IMac38946.7872106481My issue has been our school has a different perseption of our son. Dr.'s have been no help either. I want a correct dx before going back to meds. wow!!  how'd i miss all this???  i will post on this once only -seeing as it's me imac is after once again!   imac can chose to continue, but i will not.

well i think it's pretty obvious what imac is up to, as usual.  diversion and contoversy!

this thread is really old (like 2 yrs!) and i'm sure took alot of effort on imac's part to drudge up.  but again, this is what imac does, research people, post their information (kinda like stalking eh?) in an effort to discredit them.  didn't work imac.

the idea i need to defend myself is silly.  all  the people who know me here and elsewhere,  know that i have grown and changed-as people do, over time.

imac you conveniantly neglected to post the other hundreds of posts i have made over time that proved what you keep asking here.  go read those and then go away.

thanks everyone for keeping the picture clear on my behalf."appreciate it!
