Strattera and a stimulant? | ADHD Information

Thanks guys.  I have read on another forum people who have had success using Stratter is conjunction with a stimulant.  Like you shakespeare, the concerta made me feel emotionally flat.  I did not like that feeling.  Not to excited about anything in general.  My doc is a neuro pshyc so hopefully she will have some insight.

I was suppose to see her Tuesday but Wilma is suppose to hit tonight and Monday.  Perhaps she will keep appointments but I'm pretty sure we will be without power.

Good luck! Keep us posted, if you have time...

I'm not sure a doc'll prescribe the two together, but let us know.

I'd be curious myself.

It's not exactly a common practice, but yes, some people do take Strattera with a stim to maximize the benefits of each. One warning... if methylphenidate made you feel "funny" it's unlikely that Strattera will counter that effect. It might be sensible to try a lower dose of methylphenidate to see if you can get the benefits (in combination with Strat.) while minimizing the side effects. Alternatively, of course, there are amphetamine based products. Some people respond better to them... it's very individualized. I too was interested in the unique, smooth delivery system of Concerta, but I did poorly on it. I just don't do well with methylphenidate in any form. I feel dull and anxious, like I can't find the words I'm looking for. I lose the spontaneous part of my personality, and I just generally feel like a different person. Many people who take methylphenidate could say the same thing about amphetamines. 70% of patients have a better response to one over the other... they are not interchangeable.shakespeare38648.2780555556BTW, I agree with D.O., some docs probably won't be comfortable prescribing the two together. Child psychs and pdocs who specialize in ADHD treatment are more familiar with combination therapies and generally are comfortable with augmentation strategies. Many other docs will be hesitant because they will have no clinical experience with the combination. shakespeare38648.2789236111

My 12-year-old son also felt flat and inhibited on Concerta.  He is now on Focalin XR and doing well.  It helps him focus without making him feel as if it changes his personality.  He is also on a low dose of Zoloft for anxiety.  (It may have the same effect Strattera is having on you because both are antidepressants -- Strattera in the SNRI family and Zoloft in the SSRI family).  I have to say he's doing the best he's done since he was dx with ADHD almost 3 years ago.  Focalin may be something you want to ask your doc about.

I'm currently on Strattera.  I feel calmer and more relaxed.  So far I don't feel the focus effects but I may have not been taking it long enough.  I don't really have any side effects.  Just feel well adjusted without the constant anxiety level I use to have.  I want to feel focused and on task however....

My question, I use to take Concerta.  Stopped it because it made me feel "funny".  ie, racing heart and a little jittery.  Since I am on Strattera is it sensible to think I can add a stimulant without the jittery side effects?  I see my Doc on Tuesday <unless hurricane Wilma blows us away...in Key West here>.  Should I ask for Concerta again or perhaps Adderal?  I like the idea of Concerta and how it is released plus it last the longest.

Thanks for any advice....
