I have read in a couple of books about the low muscle tone, one of the books had adhd on a continuum with learning disabilities & autism & the muscle tone was a generalisation on the continuum, if that makes sense
My son also sees a podiatrist & he has mentioned it as a clinical observation & based on discussions he has had with other health workers
Of course my son is 7, so it will probably change, I also know an adhd kid with good muscle tone, so its only what I have heard
I think low tone is common, I am huge but my arms and wrists and pecs and so on are smaller than they should be. why? I dunno. but they are. And I run a lumber cutter, picking up 2x4 lumber from 1ft to 12ft all day long..I've heard that about muscle tone as well. I was a skinny kid in early elementary - then evolved into a flabby teenager and early adulthood had phased back into skinny guy. Never much muscle tone at any point though.
Since being on meds though - I notice that my muscle tone is much better! My arms especially - I work with packing bags of chips - and work so furiously that it has toned my upper body in ways I couldn't even reach when I used to try lifting weights!
About six months after being on meds I noticed that when I flex, my muscles were now defined and much bigger and more dense than ever was achieved by me - even when I tried to weightlift in high school.
Strength and stamina are up too - I used to have effort throwing around the boxes at work - they can go up to 10 or more pounds per box. Now I can throw them to the conveyor with one hand - and it feels feather light. Hard work pays off I guess!
At 38 I don't think I'm going to be a threat to the boys at muscle beach - but I like what I feel and see way more than I ever have before!
I posted on a different thread but its getting bogged down.
many risks take time to surface and I am aware that you need a very strong will to change a course of action once it has begun
I tried naturopath first, put son in new school (a Montessori school) which made huge benefits to self esteem & concentration but problem still existed. As you are aware it can be dangerous, even though I know he is really trying to hold back or excercise self control. I put him on dex with the hope of finding some calm to continue to work on things externally, such as routines, diet, activities, nice environment & soothing music, etc etc. As I am single mum & he is oldest, other boy is not quite 2 I had to act for something to work quickly to avoid the hip & shoulders, pushing etc. I am scared to send him to his room to cool off incase he breaks a window or something. Unless he goes by choice I am reluctant to drag him there because he has low muscle tone (common for adhd I am told) & Im scared of hurting him. As I said in a different post he has told me he likes the way he feels on the medication, he likes the calmness, although I admit I am finding it hard to get used to.
I have been told that there is a difference in the ratio of certain types of brain waves (alpha : Beta cant recall which ones really at this point).
Yes I look at environment & it is not perfect but it is as supportive as possible. Some of the things that can set him off are beyond control though, such as jealousy over a sibling or not letting him buy a violent game etc. Even my naturopath thinks give medication for a while to take some chance to rest. A psychologist I saw said neuro therapy has about an 85% success rate for adhd, it is lengthy (taking around 40 sessions) and the cost is around 00.
Before the ,000.00, is spent. You should probably take him to a psychiatrist..or a neuropsychologist they are better with diagnosing mood problems, autistic tendencies or any other problems...etc...They can usually get the meds fixed up pretty good if he needs them.
You hang in there
low muscle tone is common for adhders??
