Law!

It's a great field for AD(h)Ders, bc it's project (case) based most of the time & you don't do the same thing all the time. However, this is not always true. If you happen to be suing a tobacco (or any big) company or doing something else that will go on for years & years, everyone loses steam.

Law, like medicine, carries with it really harsh penalties for mistakes, though. You can lose your job & your whole career. You can screw up & get sued for malpractice & lose everything. There are court dates. There's a lot to remember. Yet, I find it easier to remember this stuff because it's usually pretty interesting.

I still bounce from job to job on a bi-annual basis. Only you know your threshhold for boredom but I found resetting other peopels expectations helps more than finding a 'career' job that I will stick at for years - it's just not going to happen in most workplaces. I fill out a job, do everything I need to and have absolutley no interest in the boring as hell plodding forwards every day type jobs.

I take my medication so I can handle the duller aspects of my role, but the job itself has to be something that I can tolerate unmedicated or it's a waste of my life.

I think ADD necessitates an approach of 'do what you love well and the money will follow', or you're simply setting yourself up for failure.

i think film is fantastic for an ADDer --- normally project based, not lasting more than three months at a time.  full on when working 6am starts 3am finishes not unusual so good for the hyperfocus --- then nothing for another few months time to chill and watch tv forever....

then an entirely new crew, or new shoot, or new project with it's own confusions and problems to overcome and back to 18 hr days....

i think it suits a lot of ADDers down to the ground.  it's often not that well paid though if you are on the techy (lighting/electrics etc.) side but it can be....

i was reading just yesterday briefly about a guy in Vancouver (the LA times was talking about how all the production is going to Canada and not staying in Hollywood) but this guy was a grip/lighting guy and when there was no work going on he ran a small charter fishing boat where he would take tourists out fishing.... and i thought he's probably an ADDer.... ya know!?!

just scraping by - never gonna be Donald Trump but it works for him.

good luck.

hey daveloyd!

There is no perfect career for us - but there seems to be some that I notice people here seem gravitated to.

There are many in the health care industry.  Perhaps because it can be moments of adrenaline (life and death) followed by times to relax and mellow out.  Not sure - I'm sure they can add to that.

Computer field - all over the place - not sure if that's because this is the internet so you'll find lots of computer savvy people or not.  I was in the field for 20 years - even have a degree but it was all dumb luck.  I was applying to be a forester when they picked me to get paid government scholarships! Go figure?!

Science - I can see why - we are curious people (aren't we though?) and go towards the unknown and investigate voraciously.  Maybe you might find something of interest?

Most employment centers have an aptitude test there you can take for free.  I don't know what to hold it to - they told me I'd be a great cytologist (agh! checking cells for cancer - noooooo!)

If you have hobbies - that may work!  For me though - computers used to be a hobby until I owned a computer store.  I couldn't stand it after that - and now that I work in a factory packing chips I am back loving it again thankfully.  But it always pays to enjoy what you do if you can!

With meds- you'll find that things that seemed not as easy to tolerate become way easier - the mundane is tolerable.  After all - the reason we work is more for money than for fun mostly!

I'm sure you'll get lots of info.  Check back in the postings too - I know around July there was a long "what is a good job?" thread.  It comes and goes every so often.  Maybe someone can "bump" it??

Have you read any of the books listed here http://www.livingwithadd.com/bookswork.shtml ?

 Hello All

Does anyone have any suggestion on careers? I've never found a job that has kept my interest. would love to find something  that didn't get boring after only a couple month's.
