Adhd Meds and Asthma | ADHD Information

I posted this on another board, but I've decided to repost it here because well.....it's seems more appropriate.

My son is 8 and has been Asthmatic since the age of 2....He currently takes Xopenex, Pulmicort and Singulair for his asthma, and we will soon be starting him on Advair as well.

This past May we started him on Strattera for his ADHD.....my question is this.......

Are there any of you that have asthma, or have a child with asthma, that have noticed a difference in the severity of Asthma attacks since starting meds?

The fall has always been Thomas' worst time but this year is really really bad, we are currently on his second course of Prednisone and had a trip to the ER last weekend.....This is all since Oct. 10th!!!!!

Any info is appreciated....

Thanks,

Mary

cindo3......how long ago did he stop taking Adderall?

I'm hoping that its just a coincedence, but I will  check w/his Ped. next week when he has his recheck.

Thanks to everyone who responded

Interesting point...... I can say that my son , (who has been on Advair/Singulair for 4 years)...his asthma and chronic sinusitis got much better  and less severe when he stopped taking his Adderall for ADD.

I never thought about it before.............. could be just a coincidence...... or maybe not ?

My son age 8 has asthma and is on Singulair, Pulmacort and Claritin, just has been diagnosed with ADHD.  He doctor has perscribed a new medication called Focalin XR, because the other classes of ADHD can have some increased heart rate, wheezing etc.  In fact look closely at the package insert for your drug and be sure that it is not contraindicated in patients taking albuterol.   Focalin is working great for our son, we have seen HUGE changes, with little or no side effects.

My son is on Strattera, and it says that it is contraindicated for people taking IV Albuterol. My son takes Xopenex, which is an albuterol derivative, but only through a nebulizer.

We use the Albuterol inhaler rarely.....i will bring all of this up to his doc on Wednesday.

Thanks again

Tyran,

It's amazing that your doc or your pharmacist didn't catch it.  Wow!  We all need to be good researchers and consumers.  Just to add to what afish said, my ADHD son is on Focalin XR and doing great, too.  So it may be worth a try.

In fairness of my doc, it was discussed prior to my son being prescribed the Strattera. He says that the type of asthma meds my son is on should not affect or be affected by the Strattera.

I will ask his Doc about Focalin. Thanks

Hi Mary-

I have asthma as well. I have had it since I was 5 ( I am now 23). I just started Strattera last friday and I have noticed my asthma getting worse. I am not sure if it is just the cold weather moving in or the new medicine.

I also take advir and singulair......and have had many trips to the ER and doses of prednisone. My heart goes out to your son I know how difficult it is to be sick. On a positive note.....after I went on Advair my asthma greatly improved...so hopefully it will help him as well.

I know this didn't really answer your question...but I am going back to the doctor on Monday to ask him if Strattera can have a negitive effect on asthmatics. I will keep you posted on what I find out.
