It's the monkey (dead monkey) that was taught all those signs... actually I'm not sure if Koko is dead! I thought I remembered being sad about Koko dying, and I am not sure if it was from cancer, old age, or murder. I think it was murder. I think I remember being angry that the smartest monkey (most LEARNED, ahem, BOOKSMART monkey) was murdered by just some fluke bullet...after all of that work being put into teaching the monkey!
But now I'm not sure if the monkey is dead at all. Memory is a funny thing, when your imagination runs wild!
