Med Change ? | ADHD Information

Metadate CD and Ritalin LA contain the same active ingredient, methylphenidate.  I wasn't aware that one was supposed to last longer than the other (I thought they were both supposed to last 8 hours).  Concerta (also methylphenidate) lasts 10 to 12 hours typically.  Focalin XR typically lasts 8 hours, but it is refined methylphenidate so it is supposed to cause fewer side effects.  Whenever a stimulant doesn't work after a good week or two trial, you should either change the dose or change the med.

We have switched my 6yr old son from Metadate CD 20mg to Ritalin LA 20mg.  Switched b/c the Metadate was wearing off after about 5hrs.  Metadate CD 30mg was way too much.  He was a zombie!  He has only been on the Ritalin LA now for 5 days.  How long should I wait for the med acclimate to his system?  This one still does not seem to be one.  He still has the impulse problems but IS more patient. When do we switch to another drug 'classification'?  Does that make sense?

Thanks!  I was wondering why they switched to Ritalin LA when Metadate CD is practically the same thing.

We have just gotten to where he can swallow pills so now of course we have more options.

I just gave him is med for today and if it doesn't start to work quickly I am going to scream my head off - as well as my younger son!!!  I love him so very much but rigtht now I could hurt him!

Okay, the Ritalin LA 20mg is still not lasting.  It is usually gone by about 3-4pm.  I really need something to last longer.  Concerta is in the same 'famliy' and is suppose to last 10-14 hrs.  BUT, I read that it disperses at 22%/78%.  We tried Metadate CD (30/70) and now the Ritalin LA (50/50).  They just don't last.  Since the Concerta's a.m. dose is only 22% is that going to be enough?  (I homeschool him in the morning mostly, so need the med to really work in a.m.)  Adderall XR is of course in a different 'family' but disperses at 50/50 while suppose to 10-12hrs.

I guess my question is change to Concerta or Adderall XR (which one?) OR ask for a short acting med for the p.m.?  For those who are experienced - what are your thoughts?  Something has got to change!!!

Thanks ahead of time!
