ADHD KEY TO SUCCESS FOR PARENTS

I am going to give you the key to working with teachers and schools. I am employed by a school board and have worked with teachers for the last 10 years. Here is the key to your child's  entire education....

If you want teachers to do something different...than YOU need to create something different and give it to them to utilize in the classroom. Do not expect teachers these days to be creative, enthusiastic or to come up with new ideas to help your son. Creativity , caring and time are gone. Teachers have entirely too much on their plate as far as testing and expectations from No Child Left Behind and other things. It is sad but true.

Go to your meeting with something for them to do. Reinforcements charts, behavior tracking forms, a set program that you want that person to follow. If you go in to a meeting empty handed you will walk out with nothing. I am a Behavior Specialist and have been a Guidance Counselor for the past 10 years. My schools parents were lucky  because I am creative and look for resources that will help kids. Teachers don't have the time....and if they get that info from a specialist or inner school admin they STILL won't always use it....why?? Because they don't have to and they will still have their job. HOWEVER, if you  the PARENT go in with a resource and put in writing that you want something done to help your student...they have to do it.  Case closed. That is the key to your kids education.

Get on the net get some resources and tell them what you want....if you expect therapy or behavior assistance from a teacher ....you are barking up the wrong tree...those days are gone...they don't do it....they don't have time...they may not even care.

I have inexpensive resources that I offer below, if you don't purchase them I hope that my mesage gets throough anyways....PARENTS need to give teachers the tools....sounds crazy but it is true...

If that's so the teaching system is flawed and needs change to meet the kids needs. The excuse no time is Bull it is more like don't want to. We see some who do things outside the materials so it can be done. If your not willing to do what's necessary I say get out. Have you heard of Learning Rx, or Brainskills?I have often thought I would like to make a webpage for " Everything the Public Schools Aren't Going To Tell You."  I am not bashing public education, however it's changed alot over the years. Schools are now more like a business, which is sad, if it isnt good for their bottom line,,,,,,,,,,,,they aren't gonna do it, unless they have to.  http://www.wrightslaw.com/, fabulous website .My granddaughter's teachers seem willing to co-operate with our ideas.  I think it's true, you have to use your own creativity most of the time especially if it's behavior in the classroom you are trying to modify. My sons teacher is also very willing to take my advice when it comes to ideas for my son.  She wants to see him succeed as much as I do (or ALMOST as much)
When I see what the teachers are expected to accomplish with these kids on a daily basis, I am usually reluctant to add more to her pile.  As much as I wish that my son was her only student and she could spend 100% of her time on him, that is not the case.  She has 28 other little people with their own issues, I am sure.
I do wish, however that there was a yearly seminar devoted to educating teachers on the techniques of dealing with ADD children.  Even just the most simple things like having them sit in the front and giving them a break to get a drink if they are struggling to sit still or even folding their math worksheet in half and telling them to do just one side (some kids get overwhelmed with a long worksheet)
Things to cut down on the pressure these kids face during the day.  Some teachers know this stuff but many don't have a clue.

I agree to a point. I don't agree with the concept that therapies and behaviour therapies is a sign of the past. What I do know is that if you ARE needing these services, you really need to speak loudly. Pester. My son is getting speech and OT therapies now through his school (he's 5). I also think it depends where you live. I do agree that unless you have a proper designation, your sh&t out of luck.

THanks for the suggestions. I've been one of those parents who have been on board 100%. Sometimes I get the feeling they think I'm too pushy. It's great in one sense but don't get carried away. We want these teachers to be on our sides. If not, they'll just smile and nodd and go about their own way.
