student at College... I think i have ADHD | ADHD Information

dude, i used to think my glasses were the reason i couldnt study. i felt tired while studying and i blamed it on my glasses. i said, well these darn things must be straining my eyes and as a result, i am very tired. so i take them off. then i cant see and squint and get even morel drowsy. so i think i must be tired because im squinting and that takes energy. so i put my glasses on. this goes on a few more times until the ticking of clock and the humming of the computer become so loud, i watch my spongebob squarepants dvd while shoveling butter pecan ice cream down my throat. i feel guilty for a minute, then the feeling dissolves into my brains recycling bin as i realize im not tired anymore. Find a good qualified professional and get tested.

You will have more to work with after you learn the truth.

GET ON MED TREATMENT PRONTO --

i was diagnosed as a kid w/ ADD parents reaction "not our son"

struggled struggled struggled,

when i got to college struggled until junior year

a guy on my hall had some really cool pills that looked like little orange harts. WOW! it was dexedrine soon i was meeting deadlines finishing projects doing laundry actually getting good grades.

"the guys" would take them to drink all night. I put a different spin on the DEXEDRINE. I set my alarm for 6 am everyday took them and produced!!

graduated w/ good GPA, Garduation also marked the end of my "orange heart" connection. dam!

slipped back to my ADD struggling . then a few years later (this year) found a good psyche, w/ intent of scoring stimulants.

Im back on track life is getting good again. when i told my brother he rememberred something i said

a few years ago, "that speed i used to score in college didnt get me high it made me normal"

I always new i was a disorgined slacker, guess it was a reverse diagnose on my part. like i said buddies used them to drink & smoke weed all night, from my first taste of dex i knew it had other uses for me, laundry study be on time show up at classes & appoinments.

& thats my reverse diagnosis!

oh yeah im pissed at parents for dismissing childhood diagnosis, they dont know Im being treated just think ive grown up.

CONCERTA 54mg Arizona energy tonic and coffee!

When you sign up for a course andforget you're in it, couldn't remember the building it was beiing held in and get a bill in the mail for the entire course!

I know the feeling, and stopped my education on a regular basis because of it!   But dont be discouraged because of it, they didn't really have a clear view of ADHD at the time!

Don't worry about the length - we here have been working on it long enough that we can either take it in chunks or struggle through LOL!

Welcome - you're in good company here.  We all struggle through life with it's procrastination, muddled thinking and urges.  However you find to work through it it's better than not knowing and thinking you're just not as good as you should be.

First - good thing you are emailing for help.  You could get an online test or two - there are good ones at www.oneaddplace.com.  I printed out mine and took it in with my first consult.

And how do you know? If you think you have it - probably you are right!  You are obviously having several aspects of your life affected by ADHD or similar - and that's one of the key things an MD or psych will look for.  In other words - if life is fantastic all over and you're just a bit scattered - it's not ADHD.

Check out the forum from top to bottom.  I guarantee you'll find help in every place from work, school, sex and even have a chuckle or two.

Glad you are here!

Hi Sumo28,

I was able to read through your entire post because I can totally relate.  I went through the exact same thing.  My first few years of college I was constantly dropping classes (because of not finishing homework or properly preparing for tests).  I got an "F" in one of my classes because I didn't withdrawl in time. I eventually dropped out for good.

Well that was 24 years ago.  I was diagnosed with ADHD 4 years ago.  The diagnosis helped me forgive myself and others for many years of misunderstanding and pain.

I started back to college part time, 2 years ago.  My new understanding along with the medication Adderal has helped me stay focused on school and complete my assignments on time.

The first class I took when I went back was Psycology 101.  Twenty some years ago I took it twice.  The first time I got a "D", the second time a "F" !

This time I took it with full confidence in myself and got an A .

If you're not diagonsed, the first thing you need to to is go to a Psycologist who has experience in ADHD or a Neuropsycologist.  Once they diagnose you, have them write the DX down on one of their scripts.  Take that to the Disability Services office at your college.  A counselor there will fill out an instructor notification form.  You will need to briefly speek to your instructor about your accomidations to make sure you're on the same page.

My accomidations, for example are: double time on exams if needed, extra time on homework if needed.  In Algebra I can even have my mid-term and final each broken up into two tests.

You are by law entitled to accomidations if the college is Federally funded (which most, if not all are).  With a diagnosis, you qualify under section 504 of the ADA (American's With Disabilities Act)

Here is a good site to read more about it if you want (once there just search 504:)

www.ed.gov

Hope this helps!  Good Luck

Thanks guys... a lot. I took that test, i sort of closed the window though. I wasn't sure of all the answers but i had a total of 185 give or take about 5. and I had 38 answers with a score of 3 or more.

bepatient- that really helps a lot you don't even know. It's very comforting just knowing that somebody else can relate to me. I've never been to a doctor in the Boston area but i will search one out. The only thing is i'm not sure if i should tell my parents about this and involve them in the process. I've been going about this independently so far and i'm not sure that i'll say anything until i figure out what's up first. I actually thing my mom probably has ADHD (i think, i get the terminology messed up) but she deals w/ it better.

Another thing is that I'm reluctant to take meds. I've always been afraid to take things fearing they'd have an adverse effect on me, but for now i guess before i jump ahead, a diagnosis is the first step.

Hey man, I hope you do well in your courses, and thanks to the both of you. It really helps hearing from you guys after a very rough and emotional past few weeks.. and summer... and past few years. i mean it, thanks. dude, i completely relate...

- Sitting in class, knowing you HAVE to just pay attention or you get kicked out of school for having a low gpa...but you just can't.  You try to force yourself, but end up focusing on one of the many scenarios playing in your head.

- Going to the library every day, locking yourself in a study room with your books, notes, highlighters EVERYTHING in hand... but you end up thinking about stupid stuff that you cant force out.

- Staying in on weekends while everyone you know goes out to the bar because you want to catch up on reading for class... then hating yourself because even though you read a whole page/chapter, you have no clue what the hell it said...like the words were never even read.   You feel like you wasted your damn time. You think you should've gone out and gotten wasted with your friends and fail, because working your butt off led to a failing grade anyway.

My whole life i thought my symptoms were completely normal.  I thought all people had a million things going on in their heads at once... but i was just too lazy or dumb to tune them out.

You HAVE to talk to a professional!!!!!!

I would do anything to turn back time and have the balls to get tested the INSTANT I heard about ADHD and related to the symptoms.  I had to learn the hard way that jobs arent fighting over C graduates;  even if that student had to work to pay for school and was heavily involved in the leading and founding of several clubs on campus.  GPA is everything when you're looking for that first job.  Employers say they look at other things, but that is BS.  They get so many resumes that the fastest way to weed out a huge amount of them is GPA.

If it's ADHD, ADD, or whatever disorder you might/might not have,  warning signs have been brought to your attention.  You have to talk to a professional.  Even if it isn't a chemical imbalance like ADHD, a professional can help you with some kind of therapy that can drastically help you.  The sooner you sort things out, the sooner you can save your academic and professional future.  If a disorder is found, tell the admissions office, the dean of students, the councilors and advisors.... anyone and everyone!!!

Know that having a disorder isn't your fault.  It's the damn chemicals in your brain that are distracting you.  I know it brings you down (God i know it sucks), but you cant be depressed man... that won't help you.  You gotta do something about it.  Once your done reading this, get on the phone and make an appointment!!!!!

My opinion is so strong on this because only a few short years ago, I was EXACTLY where you are at now.  Again, I would do anything to turn back time and get myself tested...

Take care and keep us posted!!!!
