Delivered from Distraction : Getting the

Has anyone read this? Do you have any reviews?

Stacie

I don't have it yet, but I'm going to order it soon. After I read it I will post a review. OK?Just started to read it.  It's good - but very much for the beginner (kind of "ADHD for dummies" lol).  I have gleaned pretty much the same info from here and my other friends' on other forums.  Yet - it's becoming a great tool to introduce my life to the unitiated.  Hallowell and Ratey are good writers and I look forward to finishing it.

More info on Dr Edward Hallowell. The man is brilliant! He is a world renowned expert on ADHD.

Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., is founder of The Hallowell Center in Sudbury, Mass., an outpatient clinic, and he is the author of 12 books, most recently Delivered from Distraction: Getting the Most Out of Life with Attention Deficit Disorder. On the faculty of Harvard Medical School from 1983 - 2003, Dr. Hallowell now spends his professional time seeing patients, giving lectures, and writing books. He lives in Arlington, Mass. with his wife, Sue, and their 3 children, Lucy, Jack and Tucker.

Having ADHD himself, having two children who have it, having treated it in children and adults for 25 years, Dr. Hallowell is uniquely qualified to discuss both the clinical as well as the personal and human aspects of living with ADHD.

This is the first book I read after self diagnosing and it's a definite must read FOR EVERYONE!   I wouldn't agree with Glen at all on this one (which is usually the case lol, sorry glen!) Yes, of course it goes over things that many people will already know but how can a book on ADHD not talk about the basics?  Dr. Hallowell is one of the most qualified people in this field - he's devoted his life to helping people with ADD with countless books to his credit, speaking engagements and the Hallowell Centers, one of which is the next town over from me!  Most importantly is that he writes and speaks from personal experience with his own ADD!  This book really gives some of the most up-to-date information on the subject and is full of very practical advice.  You will probably finish it faster than any book you've read and you'll feel good about living your life with ADD!  Don't hesitate a second about getting this book! After reading Driven to Distraction about 10 years ago when my ds was dxd ADHD, I realized very clearly that my deceased father must have been ADHD. Its funny, from the time ds was 3, he seemed so much like my dad. Great book!I bought this book late last week and just finished it tonight.  I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and, as an adult, I am being extremely compulsive and absorbing everything I can on the subject.  This book was an eye opening read for myself.  As a newbie to the ADHD world (diagnosed, anyway), it brought together so many parts of my life and helped me make sense of them.  As I read it and came up with many questions, Hallowell and Ratey would answer my questions within the next few pages.  I always have a hard time getting all the way through books, but I made it through this one in less than a week AND I went out for NYE.

Overall, I would say that this is a must read for anyone but the most knowledgeable people with ADHD (that would be you, GlenW).  I have been on an information binge for the past month and nothing came as close to this book for me.  The beginning is awesome, but the last hundred pages or so are a little dry.  They don't go into too much about how to cope with ADHD, but I attribute that to the huge differentiation in treatment for each individual person.

At $15 USD, this book is so worth it.  I am making some friends of mine who I think have it read it, as well as my mother.

Hey GlenW, I looked at the ADHD for Dummies book. It sucked.
