Hi my name is Wanda and I am new to the board. My husband and I are raising our grandchildren. Grandson Aaron is 10 yrs old AD/HD ODD his sister AD/HD. My grandson is the problem he is very aggressive towards my granddaughter and myself. He is taking focalin xr 20mg morning with one half clondine, lunch 10mg focalin with one half clondine,3:00 pm one half clondine and a bedtime one whole clondine. Tonight he was awful. I was lying down on couch and he push me off into the floor with his feet. I think He has broken my three toes. I am at my witts end. He has been through so much in his short life. Has anyone experience this type of aggression with your children he has been in therapy for 4 yrs I can't tell it has done anything for him. He is good at school only when he gets home on most days trouble starts till he goes to bed. Could someone tell me if there is something else that might help him. He has been on adderall xr and was taking 45 mg a day. his aggression was getting worse that is why the dr. is trying focalin. He has been on that for 3 months. thanks for listening
overly agressive behavior is not usually a sign of ADHD or a symptom of the meds either working or reacting. It seems you have brought up the aggression to your MD so I'm unsure if he's asked you to get him into a pediactric psychiatrist. That would be where I'd go.
As you are being the parents AND grandparents to him there is probably a lot of anger and resentment to his condition just under the surface. At 10 he's just beginning to understand who he is and his position in the world. That has to be very tough for him.
I would get him into a child psychiatrist ASAP. They can determine if therapy with someone near you is the best thing, perhaps change or take him off his medication and determine where the aggression is coming from.
Don't leave it and hope for the best. At his age - it will escalate unless you can figure out why. Also - why don't you know whether or not you broke 3 toes? You should get that looked at as well - small bones if they are broken in someone over 50 can lead to permanent injury, premature arthritis, walking difficulty and infection. As you are primary caregivers you need to keep yourself as well as can be!!
Good luck - please get into the MD and get that referral!
I don't know if your seeing a md or not, if you are , go to a neurologist for pediatric diseases. If you are seeing one, like I think since you mentioned therapy, then get him back in and try something different. this is not working at all.
