 Cluster,

Let's get this straight... you started taking Adderall nearly a week ago. You've been messing around with the prescribed dosage. You're having some side effects that you were never told about.

So, you show up on your "first ever" message board concerning ADHD MEDS and you try and insult me !

Yes, you are definitely scatterbrained !!!

Here's a couple things you should know.... that everyone here knows. The only problem is that those who take ADHD meds would probably never tell you this.... (just how healthy is your heart ?)...

Monday, February 14, 2005  FDA warns of potential heart risks from Adderall
No way!! A drug closely related to cocaine might cause heart problems, especially in children?? I would've never made that connection!! Geez louise.

Canadian regulators suspended sales of Adderrall XR, made by Shire Pharmaceuticals, on Thursday after the company reported that 20 people taking the drug, including 12 children, suddenly died from 1999-2003. The same day the Canadians pulled the drug, the FDA took bold action and announced it "might" study whether Adderrall adversely affects people w/o established heart problems.

Last September the FDA ordered Shire to put a label on Adderrall warning people with heart problems not to take it.

20-something deaths out of the 700,000 people who take it might not be statistically significant, but I still wouldn't give speed to my kid (if I had a kid).
Posted by Melissa Milam @ 4:33 PM  reality38663.7708796296i'm a 35 yr old single mama to a 3 yr old baby girl - was told i was adhd last tuesday - 11.1.05 - great! we'll at least that explains why i'm a big scatterbrain. i don't think the medicine i'm taking is working. i feel worse than before. i'd rather be a cluster f... than to feel like this. i feel like a zombie. also, my chest felt like i couldn't breathe. i have no energy and NOTHING as far as focusing. i am more irritable too. am i crazy or is this kindof NORMAL? i'm on adderall 20mg twice a day. i think i need something else. any advice? make a call to your dr.  tell him it is having this effect on you.

most start you out on adderall 20 mg. this is normal.

You may have to go through all the meds to find one for you, It is all trial and error.

 good luck.

bugzappers38663.6953819444Hey,

You have to work your way up to 20mgs of adderall.   I've gone very high like 40mg.
But before i could get to that point, i first took 5mgs a few weeks, then 10, then 15 then 20 ...  if u only got diagnosed last week and your already on 20-- that's way too fast.

about feeling like a zombie and feels like your chest not breathing--
adderall can cause feelings of sedation in ADDers its ok, and the chest not breathing dont worry your breathing fine some people get that i heard its because of muscle tightness.     about no energy ... adderall needs food to work. if you dont eat enough your brain cant make those neurotransmitters so make sure you eat more as you will be using your brain more.

personally i am very happy with adderall and i think its really good stuff.
but WORK YOUR WAY UP TO 20!!!
how weird is that? here's the deal!!! i am actually on 40mg daily because i take 20mg twice a day - yesterday, i thought i was not getting enough so i took it upon myself to take another 10mg... the dr. said we may have to tweak it so i thought since it wasn't doing what it was supposed to, then i would see if i needed more. told you i was a scatterbrain! we'll what i do know is that i just want ot start feeling like a normal person, whatever that is. we'll, maybe i shouldnt go to the dr. right away, and just take 5mg or 10mg tomorrow twice a day! the dr.'s PA said we would try ritalin tomorrow! what do ya think about that? maybe stay on the adderall at a lower dosage first? look out, its FRANKENCLUSTER

 MMMMMRRRRRROOOOWEWWWEERRRRrR..
[QUOTE=Countrygirl]Cluster - Call your DR.  Adderall may not be for you, however, Feeling scatter brained is a big part of ADHD and only someone who has experienced can understand that.  I have tried the no meds route,  made things worse quickly.  Some people do better with meds - me for one - Some people do ok without.  There is NO hard REALITY for everyone, since God created us all uniquely, there are different answers for each of us.  Stay in close contact with your Dr.  Also, Since you are talking about yourself a 35 year old adult, not, your 3 year old, I would ignore the above post.  Doesn't apply to you.   Hang in there!

Ditto
some breggin ritalin death not so good stuff on breggin below.

bugzappers38663.8560763889 Dr. Breggin's background includes Harvard College, Case Western Reserve Medical School, a teaching fellowship at Harvard Medical School, a two-year staff appointment to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), and a faculty appointment to the Johns Hopkins University Department of Counseling. Breggin has been in practice since 1968: he does not use psychiatric medications in his practice, and is not board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

more goodies further down.

Breggin is often criticized for a few statement he made while musing about the role of children and freedom in society. In “The Psychology of Freedom” (pp. 207-209), published in 1980 by Prometheus Books, he writes about "... a variety of sexual encounters between small children, typically aged four or five, which are recalled as purely enjoyable experiences between friendly and sometimes loving partners." He argues that "... permitting children to have sex among themselves would go a long way toward liberating them from oppressive parental authority. Sexual freedom would allow their children to become truly independent of them." These three pages from an out-of-print book are often used (effectively) to discredit Breggin. I would hope so.

Then he changes his tune so he can rescue his career.

In a later book, "Reclaiming Our Children", he strongly advocates for the ethical treatment of children and argues that our society's mistreatment of children is a national tragedy (including the role of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse).

It is obvious of his true beliefs. kiddie porn....

bugzappers38663.8592361111adderall is used first

Adderall is a central nervous system stimulant composed of four amphetamine salts: amphetamine aspartate, amphetamine sulfate, dextroamphetamine saccharate, and dextroamphetamine sulfate (the last salt is also prescribed alone as Dexedrine®). The four component salts are claimed to be metabolised at different rates.

The average elimination half-life for dextroamphetamine is 10 hours in adults, and for levoamphetamine, 13 hours. Its effects are otherwise similar to other central nervous system stimulants (see amphetamine for details.).

The manufacturer claims that the mixture of salts makes Adderall's effects smoother, with softer highs and lows, than those of other treatments for the same disorders.

Ritalin

Methylphenidate is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. It has a "calming" effect on many children who have ADHD, reducing impulsive behavior and the tendency to "act out", and helps them concentrate on schoolwork and other tasks. Adults who have ADHD often find that MPH increases their ability to focus on tasks and organize their lives.

The means by which methylphenidate helps people with ADHD are not well understood. Some researchers have theorized that ADHD is caused by a dopamine imbalance in the brains of those affected. MPH is a dopamine reuptake inhibitor, which means that it increases the level of the dopamine neurotransmitter in the brain by partially blocking the transporters that remove it from the synapses. EXACTLY!!!!!

PETER BREGGIN! what a name
braggin about his peter! i'm retarded!

all i have is my sense of humor.... i missed my callin - - should've been a comedian!

thanks sooooo much for all the info! i'll just wait and see what to dr. says tomorrow. i just can't stand that feeling of lethargy - god man, all i've done for a week is walk around like some fricken mental patient! that's probably my next step. Cluster - Call your DR.

Cluster,

By the way, since you're thinking of trying Ritalin tomorrow... perhaps you should ignore...   www.ritalindeath.com

thanks, both of you!

well, i'm sure i'll figure it all out - it just sux that i was getting excited about feeling normal, having a day without all the marbles in my head. But, i've been like this for 35 years - it can't hurt for a few more weeks or months til we figure it out. i am going to try to only take 10mg in the morning, not 20mg and see what that does. i just don't know what i am supposed to feel, so i don't know what to look for. i do know this though..... i hear people talk about how adderrall or other meds allow them to focus, to get thru a task or a conversation without drifting off to never neverland. that is not what i have felt at all -

and no..... i do not feel like eating at all, especially in the am, but i'll try it... can't hurt!

thanks again - - - the reality of it is that....
"REALITY SUX"!
Reality.. yawn,, is a troll to be ignored. Don't let him bother you. He has NO IDEA what your going through.

Let alone what he is saying.

Normally adderall is so fast acting, if it was going to do something, you would feel it with the first time you took it. And since you bumped yourself to 40mg and felt no change, I would consider yourself not a good candidate for adderall. About 20 mg is all it takes to notice a difference. I do.  Shire did a study and claimed there is no recorded evidence of any dosage above 20mg doing any benefit.  I know some docs claim 160mg is highest recommended, but my dr says... nope. I will go as high as 60mg and that is it. If you don't notice anything at that point, your just fooling yourself and going to wind up being an addict. We will find another medication.

but then you could be too high of a mg already.

maybe less is what you need. Also eat before you take it. You need food to keep your energy up, stay away from vitamin c and grapefruits. and other fruits in the morning, eat fruits more twords dinner..

So take that for what it's worth.
bugzappers38663.807037037is the adderall REALLY supposed to work that much better than the ritalin? i have seen some people on here saying that they had rather take the adderall xr because of the side effects of the regular adderall. i thought they were supposed to be pretty much the same.
granted like bugzapper said adderall works fast but ... for the first time you take it may take a couple of weeks to three weeks for you to get used to it ... i remember that when i first started taking it, at 20 i even felt nothing .. but now i am more sensitive to even smaller dosages though i burn through them faster.

also you need an activity, start reading or studying something or listening ...

don't switch to ritalin. stick with adderall for a couple more weeks. give yourself an activity where the adderall will benefit you.
