My son seems to be more hyper when his med wears off in the evening than before we started meds. Is this common?
He talks back also when off meds and he wasn't prone to this before.
tw - we'd have to know a couple of things to help with this.
A) what kind of meds? (ritalin, adderall, strattera, etc.)
B) do you know which type ADHD your son is diagnosed with? (inattentive, hyper)
C) When it is taken, how much and how often? (eg. morning with extended, 3xdaily)
If I knew these things - perhaps we could figure out something.
Thanks!
Ritalin LA 20mg (starts today with 30mg) taken in approx. 8am. Upped to 30mg today. If that doesn't work (lasts long enough or is too much) then we go back to 20mg and to doc. to get a precription for a short-acting med in p.m.
Inattentive/hyper/impulsive
You are my life saver and sanity. Thanks for helping me!
That does help. I would use the Ritalin - or perhaps get in and try one of the other Methylphenidates like Concerta or Focalin. Others here might give you more info on them but they seem to have a slightly different formulation (like focalin has dexMethylphenidate) that may work on a different angle.
If the Ritalin LA and taking a short acting just as afternoon hits works best - then fantastic! The trick is to try and find out exactly where between 8AM and afternoon he begins to droop in performance and then add the next med to get that dip off the chart. You might have to have him take it on a saturday or when you can monitor him - watch how he reacts and change accordingly.
I hope I have been of help. I keep getting annoyed by Reality and the other Troll sisters so it's nice to hear appreciation from our group. All I want is your son and all the sons and daughters to never have to go this route alone as I had to those years ago.
Let me know for sure how this day's dosage works!
