How Do You Know when your ADD isn’t ADD? | ADHD Information

Share
Ok I am so confused what was all of that...was it a poem...or ...well what the heck was that first posting...???? For sure I am ADHD...

I hear it a lot - people wondering if they have ADHD or not.  The REAL final hint is what the diagnostics say - you must have had the symptoms cause real problems in 3 areas of your life (love, social, work, etc.).  If you are totally ok but have occasional ADHD symptoms - chances are you're a normal person who forgets things sometimes, makes poor decisions and generally does ok in spite of that.

It's kind of like that old one "if you have to ask if you're crazy - you're not".  Those of us who read the ADHD labels and see where it put our life in a downward spiral know what it is.

At least that's how I see it.

Oh wait I am sorry for the Name Drops and DeGeneralesation and Personalization of the topic which  was a sincere one until  the above nonsense got in the way. To de narcissify the above whims must be curbed: The new blurb is this:

You meet diagnostic criteria. The psych gave you a checklist and pronounced ADD. Then you meet ADDers who think you're something else. How do you know? Does meeting the checklist make you ADD or can you have almost all of the symptoms and be something else entirely?

If it looks like duck, quacks like a duck, walks like a duck...

Then it could be a very duckish french poodle.

Frizz ... gee whizz . . .

So you never know?

But there are no duckish french poodles IMHO.
Does meeting the criteria automatically make you ADD? Is the definition of ADD-fitting the checklist? So that if you fit the checklist you must be ADD?

Yeah, like the person that started this thread?...Anyone should be ashamed accepting genuine sympathy and concern when all they are is an imposter.

what? who what why how would anyone think that of mizz frizz????

but mizz frizz aside what is it with trying to jump down every other posters throat at the moment.  what is with that?

everywhere i look people are being nasty with each other - now i know i am equally capable of being nasty particularly when i am in a frunky mood - but i generally don't INTEND to be so, i normally get caught up in the moment and don't think.  (there are exceptions to that obviously).

but i think we should all make a concerted effort to be nice with one another.  yay for tolerance and sweetness.  why not?

chjones38667.524525463peace and love all round.  double helpings.  hooray for everyone (actually i am not going to post anymore because i am in a frunky mood today - i can feel it and i am likely to go off on one if i am not careful... only to regret it later so see ya!) Perhaps we could ADD to the checklist and make our own DX
What think ya, Mizz Frizz?
I definiately, most certainly and maybe meet the criteria for the french doodle, uh depending on the day.  y tu?

Really, it's all guesswork. Nobody really knows. If you *want* to have ADD, then you do. That's just the way the system works. Proving that someone doesn't have ADD is more difficult than determining if they do.

If you think you have ADD, you get to try the meds. If they help, then who cares if you have ADD or not?

How do you know if it's ADD? In my opinion, for what it's worth, as long as the following criteria are met, then it's most likely ADD:

- you match the core checklist symptoms, and have your whole life
- you don't have any other conditions that would mimic ADD (such as thyroid problems)
- the symptoms cause problems in your life

The reason I say they must cause problems is because a friend of mine once did one of those online tests for the hell of it. She scored very high for ADD. She talks non-stop, she is very insecure, if she's watching tv you have to say her name 5 times before she'll look at you, she never finishes any projects or hobby-like things she starts, and she continuously makes decisions on impulse.

BUT, she can decide to study for hours and do it. She can decide to clean her house and do it. She never suffers ill consequences from any of her impulsive actions, because she never makes impulse decisions on the "big" things. She doesn't finish projects but that's simply because she's not a crafty person - she finishes all work and school related projects with time to spare.

It all depends on how you read the questions. Everyone experiences ADD-like symptoms at some point. But if the symptoms of ADD are continuous and cause problems in your day-to-day life, then you have it. If not, then you don't have it.

yes. does it control you, or do you control it?

i am less in control, and always in trouble.

i have control on occasion, but it is coincidence and not just a decision.

ZORG, so who do you think 'the FriZZ' is . . .oh  man mizz frizz i wish i hadn't opened my big mouth.....

it's all d'os fault i'm sure! he questioned it and i answered ahhahahahahaha
