Our doc said that it was safe to give our 6yr old.
Taylor even asks for it on nights when he knows that he will not be able to go to sleep.
A few years ago, you couldn't buy Melatonin in Canada. I don't know if that's still true.
No idea why... just that you weren't allowed to buy or sell it.
When I have taken Melatonin myself I got a more restful sleep and felt calmer in the mornings. From past experience, I know it's important to find a brand that has not been watered down or stuffed with fillers. But there are some good ones out there. A good health food store will lead you to the good brands. There's an insomnia thread around here somewhere that you could search for that has sleep aids listed. Search on "insomnia"Here are a couple of ideas:
1) Try giving him a bath 2 hours before bedtime, with Lavender, Gerber baby wash.
2) Play Yanni music at night, I know it sounds weird but It helped my son for awhile.
3) If he still has problems, talk to his physican, and see if they can try a low dosage of clondine on him. It is a medication used for adults to lower blood pressure, but its side effect, is that it makes kids very sleepy. That worked for my son for awhile, Now they have him on Trazadone 25mg. Which is awesome. He actually falls asleep before 11pm.
Let me know if these work for you.
My son has been taking ADHD meds for about 1.5 months now. He also at times has trouble sleeping. Our ped. said it was okay to give him Melatonin. You can buy the chewable or swallowables at GNC. Make SURE it is plain Melatonin - nothing added to it. Since my son will not chew the tablets, I buy him Bio Nite drops from a Biometics suppler. I put it into a small cup of chocolate milk right before bed time. It does work for us!
If you need any more info about this let me know!
Been there!
