Hi Shortwun,
I'm new here and have a son who is 13 and was just diagnosed with ADHD. He just started taking Concerta and says it makes him feel better. You should be very proud of yourself. I couldn't imagine my son taking the iniciative like you have. Your mother should be very proud of you. Good luck with all your efforts.
Love and best wishes,

Why is it that England is soooo far behind on all this!! My school have never even heard of ADHD before my family came along, and I bet you it's not cos we're the first. The hardest part is not their inabilty to understand, but the fact that I have to come to terms with it myself in the face of their disbelief. I'm 18 in november and I've only just started confronting my problem when it may be too late. My mother has ADHD and she only started taking ritalin a year ago. She's 47. She always thought that she was just stupid. I always thought I was lazy cos I couldn't concentrate. Going from a life of continually blaming yourself for your inadequecies to realising it truly isn't your fault is the most difficult part of facing ADHD.
The only advice I can give to someone else with my limited time with ADHD is, don't ignore the problem. Do not ignore ADHD. It can have serious repercutions if you try to forget about it. I tried for a while and it has set me back. Don't let anyone tell you you're stupid. To realise that you have ADHD is one of the most important discoveries in your life that you can make. It is a solvable problem and with your family behind you, you can conquer ADHD.
Sry if i didn't respond fast, but I have been so busy getting ready for school. I also went to an appointment today to deternmine it. I do infact have ADHD and he put me on Tenex and Straterra. I hope that these two won't restrict me in golf. Does play sprts and take either one of those? Btw, if u havent found it ont the site, the url for the quiz is http://www.addvance.com/resources/Articles/Checklist.htm. Truely sry i couldnt have told you earlier. I just hope that if u do have it, everythign works out. I hate side affects and i start my meds tommorow.

ashley38208.9101041667Well ShortWun - congratulations on being honest with yourself - you must be very astute to work this out for yourself. If you feel you need help - get it and it will probably change your life and open up more options for you - good going.Hi i am 13 and i think i have addHave your mother ask the school to do an evaluation. They can do one for free and while they can't diagnose you, they can give your mom the results she needs to take to the dr and have him diagnose you. She should send a letter to the school, return receipt requested and do it now, not wait until school resumes. That way you can get it done right at the beginning of the school year if the school doesn't do them during the summer.
Hang in there honey! Let us know what you find out.
i would like to share somthing with you i dont know if this is off topic but....ShortWun4,
That happens to me still. I will really enjoy a book and tell someone they should read it because it was soooo good, but I can't tell them what it was about! You are certainly not alone!
Why are you afraid to talk to your mother about this? If you really can't face her with it, then when school starts, talk to a teacher you had last year whom you believe noticed the problems and ask the teacher to refer you for testing. If he or she does, and they should, the school will contact your parents for permission to test.
If you are having problems now, then you really should get tested so you can get help as it will get harder in high school. Please try to talk to your mother. We really want to see you get the help you need.
Barb
Thanx everyone
NeuroComm,
I have never heard of that site before. I am going to check it out! Barb
ShortWun,
What you experienced in school is called "hitting the wall". Your high IQ and hard work most likely kept you going in school in spite of the adhd until now. Many people hit the wall in jr high due to the increased work load and the harder work. You also are doing a lot more in depth work than you did in grade school.
There is a place here in this forum for web sites and books which people here have found helpful. Try to talk to your mother about it and she can get the addresses for sites which will help her understand what you are going through.
If it will help, you can PM me and I will arrange to e-mail or chat with her. It is very possible that she will be glad to find out why you are having such a hard time and that there is something that can be done. She is your mom and she loves you. She wants what is best for you! Barb
My mother read a recent article in YM mag., and it was about ADHD. Most of the stuff the girl was goin thru sounded like me (altho she was in college and in gonna b a junior in high school). I even went on www.addvance.com and took the test. I had a very high score, and I'm just afraid. I dont really know what this is, and Im gonna get tested in about a month. So far, everything i have checked on says i have the inattentive type ADHD. I'm just very worried and scared from everything from meds to the actual results. Ne advice would b great. good luck shortwun04
I sent her a PM. Please be sure she reads it and responds.
I want you to know that she is one great kid and you are a teriffic big sister! She has told me in PMs just how much she looks up to you and how supportive you are of her.
