" And if you were to study any anatomy and physiology book and the DSM-IV which is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th edition, you would see that ADHD/ADD is a neurological dysfunction in the brain."

... if you look in the DSM book, you will see that NOSEPICKING is now a registered disease.

I wonder what drug they are pushing for that .
Has anyone found anything to help their memory?? I am 33yo and I am going back for my masters, I cant remember anything!!
You asked, so here you go.

I have been helped by crawling exercises.  I admit it sounds nuts, but it really has helped me.  You can read about the book that helped me on the book and article post.  The book is called Stopping ADHD.  My short term memory has improved radically.  I don't forget to pick up my kids and take them places, or to bring them home.  I don't forget meetings, or things I've committed to do.  I've made it to my choir practice for church - I usually forget that, but I love to sing!

I can't say that medication (I used to take Adderall) or the crawling exercises helped me with anything memories from the past.  It seems like I still have a hard time recalling those things.  So, Glen, way to do for you!!!

One nice thing about the crawling thing -  No troll can pester me about it!!!  They can't say that there are any side effects from crawling - except maybe rug burn!!!

Ignore reality as has been said above.  He showed his true colors by saying - and I quote " Drugs should be used as an absolute last resort... as in a life threatening situation" - his words.

Lee - my memory a year ago was swiss cheese - unless I enjoyed what I was remembering or it was useless trivia.  Even when remembered - there was usually a problem in it somewhere.

Once I began taking dexedrine a year ago and taking therapy - I was AMAZED that my memory became nearly photographic! I can now remember complex lists, tasks - and get this - all the things I thought I had forgotten!! I was truly impressed and overjoyed!

I freak my parents out by being able to, when asked, recollect most specific months of my life going back to age 4!  Colors, smells - you name it!

Now - most here haven't had that impressive result - but there is always some improvement in the majority of cases.  even just shutting off the extra chatter and improving focus does wonders.  Therapy can achieve this - but it takes time and can be expensive. It is a matter of retraining the mind to acheive focus.  That's our main problem.  Hard to remember when your mind keeps dragging you around.

Good luck my future PHd (MD, whatever) friend.  Hey - if my advice helps you - can I get help in your chosen field someday? (unless you are going for proctologist or Gyn).

Lee03: Ignore Reality

EVERYBODY WHO IS NEW ON THIS SITE:

REALITY, ADHDisBOGUS, CURUS, AND BALANCED ARE TROLLS.  THEY ARE ROBOTS TRAINED AND BRAINWASHED TO ATTACK FOLKS WITH ADHD AND TO LIE TO US ABOUT THE DANGERS OF MEDICATION!

A significant percentage of antidepressants users (especially Paxil users) have trouble with short term memory loss.

It is a side effect of those drugs and in some cases, it is permanent.

Feel free to go through ALL of my previous posts and collect any of them in which I say that ADHD doesn't exist. YOU WON'T FIND ANY !

I certainly wasn't bashing ADHD... I was simply pointing out a cause of short term memory problems.

Hi Reality, I acknowledge your views, this is a free country and all, but I am not new to the site and I happen to have had studied abnormal psychology.  I have a degree in Political Science, with a post BA certificate in corporate law.  I am studying to receive my masters in Nursing, where I will become a Nurse Practitioner. And if you were to study any anatomy and physiology book and the DSM-IV which is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th edition, you would see that ADHD/ADD is a neurological dysfunction in the brain.  In defense of myself and everyother ADDer, please keep your comments to a forum that will appreciate them.  It is people like you who make people like us feel like we are different. When actually we just need a little encouragement or a good laugh.  We just want a place that we can comment and communicate on things that others understand. I dont need to hear about who are robots and all that other mess.  My meds actually help me focus. I love this site, and whether I am on drugs or not, I am an ADDER.  So if you really want to help someone with ADD/ADHD, offer to clean their house, you are welcome to come clean mine. If you cant do that, please keep those other ADDer bashing stuff to yourself, or direct to someone who cares.  Have a good day!

lee03,

Have you been taking an SSRI or SNRI antidepressant for a few years now ?

If so, have you been on Paxil for more than a year ?

Antidepressant use messes up your short term memory and Paxil is the worst one for that.

I would definitley see a Nerologist. Sudden onset of memory loss can be serious or non-serious medical issues. At 33 you probably don't have early Alzheimers. I'd definitely check it out if it were me.

lee03,

Sounds kinda weird but it works.

I do crawl across the floor.  My hands are flat, my feet are flat and my head needs to be up with my face forward.  I put weights on my ankles when someone cannot provide resistance for me.  I also rock back and forth in a crawling (box) position.

Read the book called Stopping ADHD and you will understand it a lot better than I can explain it here.

When we were all babies we had certain reflexes.  Each one helped in our development (you know, like your knee kicks out when the dr taps it with a hammer?)

One of the reflexes is called the STNR.  It is a reflex that propels you forward, urging you to move when your arms and legs are bent at the same time.  It is what gets babies to rock, to crawl, and to stand and walk.  The STNR is located in the neck/upperback region.

Most people mature this reflex by rocking and crawling as babies.  Some don't crawl enough when they are a baby and the reflex stays with you.  It bothers you.  It makes you uncomfortable, but you don't realize it because it has always been this way for you.  You can't sit in a chair for very long unless you lean back and stretch out those legs.  You have a hard time concentrating on things beacuse it bothers you. (Personally, I believe the crawling also makes connections between the two lobes of your brain that nothing else can make. )

If, while your were a baby, you did not crawl for 6 months or in the proper way (if you dragged a leg, wore casts, etc) then you can still have the effects of this reflex still bothering you.

I can't say that I could feel that reflex bothering me.  But I can tell you that after doing these exercises for about a month (sporadically even)  I have really had an improvement in my ADD symptoms.

Hope that helps.

Has anyone found anything to help their memory?? I am 33yo and I am going back for my masters, I cant remember anything!!You have to ascertain the reason your memory is failing you. If you havent already gotten a diagnosis with regard to why your memory fails you, do so and then follow up with your doctor based on his/her recommendation is. The protocal for what works depends on the problem. Good luck.
