Boy, I have been there and still reaping the consequences!!! Went to a private college that cost something to the tune of ,000 a year. Flunked just about every class and after a year, I gave up but I now have so much debt it makes my head spin. A loan officer was after me for years and I just didn't know what to do because I just couldn't afford the minimum payment. I had to declare bankruptcy or go to jail. So I declaired bankruptcy. I was so lost in all this legal jargon and commitments and such that I willing to do anything and let anyone lead me becuause I just didn't have the capicity to lead myself. Now I am nearly 25, have only one year of college under my belt (from a local junior college) that I just finished and more debt than I can ever think of paying off (I was able to get rid of approx ,000 in loans due to a technacality in the verbage of one of the loans).
First of all I commend you for taking the responsability to pay off your debt. It's hard to do and seems like a temendous amount of things that have to be done. I won't lie, it is. Find a lawyer you feel you can trust that will take care of alot of the paperwork involved. Good luck! Just keep plowing through and you will get to and end!
Aren't your bills paid automatically from your bank account? That's the way I pay all mine (we call it direct debit here), which often does require a lot of juggling between my business, loan and personal accounts. I have managed to acquire the US$ equivalent of over 100k of personal debt since leaving university, but on the plus side I do have a business which is now growing fast enough to mean that I am now able to repay more than I earn each month.Sorry, that last bit didn't make sense. I meant I can repay the debts at a faster rate than they grow.I had a delinquent student loan. Eventually, I made an agreement with the collection agency that represents the Department of Education to pay them 0 a week. This was a stopgap designed to buy me time before I got into a payment plan where I would have to pay more money.
This was before I was diagnosed with Adult ADD.
The Dept of Education sent me invoices every month, and I would pay them. Then one month, they didn't send the invoice. I believe they did this on purpose. Because I have Adult ADD, it is not easy for me to track bills and make payments ontime. I missed the payment during the month they didn't send the invoice.
Because I missed the payment, they are coming after me bigtime, and are telling me that I now have to pay them about 0 a month, which I can't afford. The original payment plans were about 0 and 0 per month, depending on the length of repayment.
Now I am filing for hearing, to see if I can have them allow me to get into one of the payment plans that I was eligible for before they forced me to pay more than I can afford. I plan to submit a letter from my psychiatrist, stating that I have this condition, and stating that the effects of the condition are the reason that I missed a payment.
If anyone has had any experience with this sort of thing, or knows of a lawyer who has experience in this area, I would appreciate hearing from them.
i'm so sorry you're dealing with that. i don't have any experience with that at all. i do find however , since i'm about to get back into school : that i've looked into applying for basically disability status for the exact type of behavior you are talking about..that the list of criteria for proving that you have adhd just tends to seem to be skeptical and cynical to me. maybe i'm wrong. however it does seem like i don't know - that they think that everyone and their brother would claim adhd status. i dont know who would.
i can't even concentrate on this msg!!! i'm totally frazzled.
to be continued. when i can spare my brain for a moment.
right now i'm totally distracted cant even look at one thing for more than a few seconds..
argh!
sumi
I'm still in the stage where they are telling me how much I have to pay, so nothing is being paid directly at this point in time.[QUOTE=ideaspring]Aren't your bills paid automatically from your bank account? Heeeyyy...you can't do that to ADD people! I read that about 45 times before I just decided to move on because I just didn't get it!
That's pretty bad. I just knew that I was too distracted to read an entire paragraph..and comprehend it!
