calcium is a nutritional requirement. vitamin D help our system absorb calcium into our body. eat a boat full of calcium but forget about the vit D? you just wasted a lot of your time. not many people are aware of this fact though. maybe you all are because you're adhd =). but its just not taught or emphasized enough in school. in fact, importance of nutrition overall isnt really emphasized enough.

maybe the importance of nutrition isnt emphasized enough becasuse certian people want it this way. pharmaceutical companies and doctors thrive off of sick people. they need us to be sick or they're out of a job.

if pharmaceutical companies really cared about the health of people..so much that they make a living by supply medicine to those in need...then why are my friends in third world countries dying everyday?

a very strong/possibe correlation exists between smoking and cancer. another between fast foods and disease/early death rates. the government doesnt seem to do much though. oh but you will hear from them every freakin day if you're off a dollar on your taxes..money wins when it comes to the scale of: a dollar vs a life

nutrients are what we are. we're a mass of protein for the most part, some carbs, fats, vitamins and minerals. you are what you eat. that statemnt is true, if you eat hamburgers everyday, you're not gonna turn into a meat patty and grow hamburger buns out of your ears, but you will become all the crap that makes it.

some cereal boxes print health claims on the front of boxes: "low fat!"   "reduces risk of heart disease!"    "prevents colon cancer and yeast infection!". the claims are very minimal though.

did you know the fda says requires these companies that want to promote health claims, that they must be proven more than once through scientific experiments/research before they can be considered for print? then after they have proven the claim, it still has to "fill out an application" and go thropugh a lengthy waiting time period before they are published, IF they are published...

aids is a conspiracy. it was created in a lab somewhere in montana by some dudes trying to make some quick cash from the governement. the cure for it is probably sitting in one of their sock drawers.

LostinSeattle,

I'm with you. The job of the government SHOULD be to protect the people from companies' whose main objective is to separate you from your money. Voting does only so much-- sure it's important, but the system is set up to favor incumbents and only the 2 major parties. The 2 parties represent about 1% of the spectrum of political thought, but they are the only parties you hear about in any election. This is NO accident. If voters have meaningful or consistent access to the ideas of the Green, Communist, Christian Falangist, New Party, Constitution, or Prohibition parties, for example, we may begin to have a REAL conversation about politics, democracy, economics, or the government's role in our lives. Furthermore, people should not have to pay their representatives in order for them to actually REPRESENT them.

And while pharmaceutical companies aren't into charity, the government should prevent them from GOUGING people when they are attempting to simply STAY ALIVE. It is one thing to charge lots of money for pills for an erection, and something entirely different to charge for medicine for HIV or other life threatening diseases. These companies are making money hand over fist, but charging us big bucks. They say its for "research", but studies have shown that it's more for MARKETING than anything.

Did you know that pharmaceutical companies wine and dine doctors and hospital administrators to use their products? And they're not taking these people to Appleby's, believe me. While its improved recently, companies used to frequently take doctors on trips and have lavish parties to schmooze. So while you think your doctor is suggesting a certain drug strictly because in his professional judgment he thinkgs that it would work best for you, it's also because the drug has been heavily marketed.

Lost - I had no idea you felt this way!

Firstly - Nutrition was an underfunded and outdated category in public school - but this year they have modified the curriculum and now have altered the emphasis on reducing carbohydrates (potatos went over to sugar from the veggies area too), increasing vitamins and protein (from all sources) and exercise as an important addition to metabolizing food!

It's not the job either for the government or pharma companies to assist us in doing what we should do naturally - like be healthy, avoid fat and sugar, quit smoking (and drinking that's far more serious), etc.

Also - what's this bend on that MDs and pharmas WANT us to be sick?! - they are in it to make money - all people work for that except for charity workers.  That's the rule of capitalism.  They aren't thinking of how to keep us sick.  You know what they are really thinking?? How to make men maintain erections, women remove wrinkles and to remove fat with a pill.  All requested by - guess who? The money holding public.  When the public says "I'll pay for that!" - then they will make it happen!

There are special programs provided by all pharmas for life-saving meds to the third world.  Problem is - most of the third world is corrupt - and there are either pirates stealing the meds as quickly as they come in - or the presidents and leaders taking them and reselling them via Russia, eastern Europe and Asia.  Don't hold them responsible for all the worldly woes.  It's a dirty world you and I both live in.  Look at it clearly.

OVEREATING causes obesity.  That's voluntary and if you fed a diet good and healthful they could still eat to fatness.  That's a fact.  Long before fast food there was obesity and if you burned all the take-out places down - the overeaters would just end up eating lean chicken by the truckload.  Or beans if you removed meat.  They are sick but not from mcnuggets.

Smoking combined with a weak gene for lung or throat cancer causes it yes.  But its a personal choice and they have all but removed smokers from the non-smoking population.  Personal choice again - if someone wants to risk death just raise their insurance.  What? They DO!?! Wow - what smart insurance people!!

Drinking - notice you didn't mention drinking at all!  Most lethal of all personal abuses - kills more than crack, crystal meth, smoking,  AIDS - whatever.  If you add up all the causatory deaths (murder, drunk driving, alcohol poisining, liver damage, etc.) and injury the costs are staggering.  Yet I hear very few saying to ban alcohol.  Hmmm personal choice and moderation you say? Wow - I could say that about food and smoking too - oh wait I did!

The government is voted in by you.  They are influenced by special interest groups - join one and lobby!  They are voted OUT by you - go to the poll!

Each person has to make the choices for themselves.  If you only ate celery all day long - you'd die of starvation.  Same with a lot of foods.  But do you want your publicly elected official saying "no twinkies for you - I know what's best"?

OK - your rant on the FDA - what is the point? I couldn't figure it out sorry.

As to AIDS - I have to ask you what you are smoking.  HIV is linked genetically to feline leukovirus - a retrovirus that is lethal to cats.  The assumption by tracing the viral RNA is that jungle cats bit chimpanzees and other primates - which survived carrying a mutation that infected but left them alive.  The primates were then eaten undercooked in the jungle by humans - where the virus mutated again.  The virus has been traced back as far as the 1950s - where there was no ability to create or alter - or in fact detect most viruses.  The HIV virus has proven to be extremely mutable even now - and has produced many subcultures of itself in reaction to the HIV meds out there.  The rumor comes out every now and then - and if you truly thought about it you'd be laughing not putting it in your conspiracy file.  It's the 2000s "alligator in the sewer" myth.

I love the idea that pharmas would hold a cure for anything.  The rumor a while back is that pharmas are keeping cures for the common cold under wraps to sell meds.  Guess what? No major pharma holds any active patents on any cold meds!  So where would the profit be?  And a cure for any major illness would be a boon for a pharma that would guarantee their fame and future PR that money just can't buy.  It's spread to cause bad PR - and it's just bad taste.  People tried it when febreeze came out - trying to convince people that it killed your pets.

I'm not razzing you to get you angry lost - just going through your points and trying to show you there are holes.  Big ones.

Still friends I hope? Agree to disagree?

Please exuse my ignorance, but how the hell do you guys know all stuff let alone remember it all??

One more thing, What is Appleby's?

Appleby's (I may be spelling it wrong, now that I think about it) is a restaurant chain. Prices are in the US-12 range for entrees. Kind of the same caliber as Bennigan's, TGIFridays, Ruby Tuesdays--  I don't know if you have any of these in Australia.

I'm with you lost. Hubby laughs at me when I open my mouth..... Calls me a conspiricy theorist. And my sister in law says to me, you just think in more different ways to the rest of us.

Even here is Australia there are major cracks and flaws. Hubby and I own a Plumbing and gas fitting business and we basically work to pay taxes and just about nothing else, we do alright but wow it is hard, always behind the 8 ball. I know exactly what you mean about actors and such.

I was just thinking I'd like to set up and email chain and get every plumber in Australia to take a week off ...... ALL at the same time . Gee the country would be in a real mess after that. But my point is if all the actors took a week off at the same time it really wouldn't be that big a disaster but if plumbers or say electricians did........... WOW............. That would be insane.

Or have every small business in Australia hand the Australian Tax Office a bill for collating their GST and collecting it on behalf of the government because in effect every business owner who pays GST is collecting on behalf of the government and is doing the government a service.

I could go on about all the speed limits that have just changed in our country and motorists who have never been booked now are being booked because they don't know what sped to do where. In Victoria there is one intersection where a semi trailer can be in 3 speed zones at the same time .

Then there is a drug trial here is SA that no one knew was happening where druggies are being given Dexamphetamines ( used widely here for ADHD ) to ween them off amphetamines that the bikies make and sell . As one opposing polotician put it, the only difference between bikies and the statwe government is that the bikies sell the drugs to druggies and the government gives them druggs for free to keep using ( all tax funded I might add )............ Which then for me puts up the whole thing off getting everyone on medication to conform to what govenments say we must be rather than being who we are.

Enforcing education in the way the governments do which totally destroys the natural order of some people and then making us pay for it.

Allowing fast food companies to bombard with advertising then allowing all these medical companies to make all the un founded or deceptive promises.......... Governments DO have their hands in this grabbing all they can.

Etc........ Etc........ Etc..........

Tis the same here.

I'm the same as you Lost................ I'm exactly that in this world as to how this world opperates and for how much longer it can go on or how much further the coruptions can continue............... I'm LOST.

i think my way of thinking is a little different then most. not better or worse, just different. and with that, i see both sides a lot of the time. i could start my own law firm, it'd be one of a kind cuz i would defend both sides at once. my way of thinking is a little immature in the sense that i havent learned everything im going to learn yet.  im still young. so my opinions are based on the little that i know as of now. thats why i sometimes post dumb things on here because i want the insight of others that have a few years on me. "normal people" (i love saying that) tend to be one sided or follow the norm. speaking to people on here is like talking to me, the older me that i wish i was right now. does that make sense?

have you heard of that diamond-water theory? diamonds are fun to look at and show off to look at but they wont save your life like water does. yet water is free and diamonds the opposite.
diamonds are rare and water very abundant, so i can see why water is free/cheap.
but i also think a little bit that so much significance should not be placed on diamonds. why do we love diamonds anyways? cuz they're pretty? really? but they're so small..is it because we like to show off status? that we are richer than you, someone loves us more than you? you are starving and i am buying things worth more than a house?
i always daydream about a world where healthcare/meds are free, laborers paid more, everyone has access to certain necessities, everyone is happy, no third world countries, and no snobby over-rich countries. i like equality and fairness. i dont have a lot of money. and when certain people, my "friends", come around with louie vuitton purses and mercedes, i dont mind. but when they start to act better then me and degrade me because i wore that yesterday, i do mind. so i wore it yesterday, i dont have a lot of clothes. they're just clothes anyways who cares. i dont stink.
scarcity of product and materialism will always be dominant when it comes to the 'importance scale'. the more expensive it is, the greater significance it has (cars jewelry; etc). the tvs shows i see on the entertainment channel make me giggle. there was a show i saw about what the stars are wearing. another on what houses they live in and how much money they have/make. and another on how to dress like them. no offense to anyone that likes watching those shows..i just look at it as, these people are just making a movie, or a show, or taking a picture for a magazine. but they're paid so much because of the value society places on entertainment. professional athletes, singers, actors; etc, they all get so much money for their talents. my school doesnt recive enough funding, so my chem lab cant do certian experiments. is my school not important? entertainment is important, but only to a certain degree in my opinion.
my uncle told me i have an innocent way of thinking.  i draw  up perfect pictures that dont exist. i guess i just dream too much. i love to be happy and think everyone else does too. i also feel that alot of pain and suffering in this world could easily be resolved. stemming from that thought, i also feel there are alot of closeminded people..too many sometimes. and because they are the majority, their way will always dominate. right or wrong, they outnumber minority and in the end thats what matters. some examples: "the world is flat, not round", early 1900's racial segregation because african-americans had a disease/were dirty, aids existing only in homosexuals...i wish people would try to think outside of the box  and learn things for themselves and not just follow the trend.
sometimes i picture the whole world with all the countries color coded: the countries that are happy are white. the countries that are sad and crying because they're sick, dying, hungry, or poor are red. many are partly or all red in my vision. even the u.s, has spots of red. but our president spends alot of money on war. im not shooting this down, but do we really have to spend majority of funding on wars that dont really concern us when we have our own neglected wars in our streets?
i know some of these colored spots are a result of some people that are too lazy to get up and get a job and  the people that have million dollar homes worked hard to get there and deserve it. but then i remember that some dont work hard or starve on purpose, they were born into where they are. has anyone seen that show on mtv called "laguna beach"? its a show about a bunch of rich kids.
thats. about. it.
i realize many like this show and thats why shows like this are created, but im still not a fan...sorry. im a fan of saving the animals because they were here first. we dont have a right to take their home away just because they cant defend themselves.

im such a little kid when it comes to feelings on issues..but am i so wrong for dreaming these things?

(crappy) drawing of a donkey:

Glen, the system isn't only flawed, it's broken. Of course I vote (not for that numbskull in the White House, obviously), of course I write to legislators. I've even given money to campaigns! The part that is broken is that our legislators have responsibility to police themselves on the rules that govern them-- campaign finance, incumbancy rules, the ability for "third parties" to participate or receive funding for campaigns. Usually, these rules aren't sexy enough to be covered by the press or paid any attention to the average voter or are so esoteric that no one but the bastards who write them know what they mean. Unfortunately, these boring rules directly affect our access to OUR democracy!

The sad part is that the average American doesn't have the time it takes each day to really delve into the issues that so profoundly affect them. Because they don't read and get most of their political information from 2 minute snippets on the nightly news or don't have a degree in political science like I do, they are easily swayed by soundbites and the politics of paranoia, fear, and hatred-- red herrings and straw men. I bet that the "moral" millions who voted for GB are wondering where their anti-gay marriage amendment is. I hope they have started to realize that his loyalty is only to his monied corporate cronies.

The "conspiracy" is simply mis- and disinformation. Politicians are like the "wizard" in the Wizard of Oz-- "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!" Let's talk about gay marriage, but ignore the fact that the disparity between the richest and poorest Americans is similar to that of Victorian times. Let's talk about educational accountability as "no child left behind," but ignore the fact that thousands of kids are dropping out or being kicked out for dragging down their schools numbers.

Anyway, that's my anti-Bush rant for the day. Don't mean to offend-- this is the adhd forum, not the "holy-crap-what-in-the-world-were-they-thinking-when-they-vo ted-for-that-idiot-again" forum.

Lost--

No, you are not wrong for dreaming these things, for being idealistic, or for not being impressed by the all-mighty dollar. The idealists will keep us striving for a better world where the powers that be realize that violence is not the way to solve problems, and that we can all be enriched when everyone is healthy, nourished, and educated. Idealists look for better solutions even when others give up and face "reality."

There is one thing that you will have to be on guard for, however-- disillusionment. Idealists are vulnerable to it. The more you know about the way the world works, about the power brokers in society, and about their seemingly inhuman disregard for anyone who doesn't look like them, the greater danger for you to lose your idealism. It has definitely happened to me-- it's a struggle to maintain my idealism the older I get.

taritac - of COURSE the system is full of flaws! That's what democracy is all about!

Lobbyists exists for absolutely everything in the US - including pharmaceuticals.  To single them out as the evil one is totally false.  They are a for-profit business and should make money from what they spend billions on research for.  That is the whole point - and why viagra and propecia are more widely used than antibiotics, painkillers or pretty much any med in existence!  Money is the oil that turns the gears of western society.

If you don't like the system - get out and lobby yourself! There are dozens - perhaps hundreds of groups who are raising money and working towards influencing US politics.  Why there's the Church of Scientology, Society for Moral living, Jimmy Swaggart Ministries - just pick one!

I get tired of people saying the system is corrupt.  You people vote for these idiots! What did you expect from George "Cheney's bitch" Bush ?? He's a moron who is driven by the thought he's God's messenger to America! He loves the rich and spits on everyone else.  He kills young men and laughs.  He kills the mentally ill and laughs.

You vote people in or out.  If you don't like the service make a change.

There's no big conspiracy.  It's out in the open.  Pharma wants to make money - goes to congress.  Congress agrees (for a fee) and no American outrage comes.  Bill passes - you live your life and grumble into your rice crispies.

I vote against what I don't like.  If I dislike it enough I give money to groups that fight it.  That's democracy.

This is not X-files ok? There's no hidden world of illuminati and tucked away recipes to cure aids and run engines on water.  What a joke.
