My 9 year old takes 54mg of concerta. So far it has been great. We had report card conferences. He has really improved in reading. We were so excited to see that they had him on grade level in reading. He got staight B's so we were happy. Everyone says no behavioral concerns. The main thing was having him sit still in his seat. The main teacher that hasd a concern was the math teacher. He has her first thing in the morning at 9:00. We give him the concerta at 7:30. We were wondering if it is jsut not kicking in enough when he sees her.
Any ideas on how to get it better.
Just thouth I would trough it out here before contacting dr.
Thanks
I take my concerta at noon and dont really feel the full affect till about 2 along with the major stomach pain. Is your son experinceing this as well?I dont fell comfortable taking concerta I dont feel its been out long enough I would rather take some thing tried tested and true I dont want to be a lab rat! My doctor said to try the stomach pill and if there is still some pain we will look at an alternative.. You should loose weight on concert not gain in 2 weeks i gained 3 lbs
Thanks for the ideas.
We are really going to make sure that he eats a good breakfast. He usually does not want breakfast but has a good morning snack at school. He generally is a very good eater. Mornings are just a time when he does not eat.
Maybe that will work.
Thanks

I use to take Concerta a few years back. I currently take Ritalin LA. The Concerta did not effect me early enough in the morning and I had to take a small dose of Ritalin when I first woke up. The Ritalin always felt better than the Concerta. So this time when speaking with my doctor (I haven't used meds in a few years) I told her (and a different doctor) that I didn't like Concerta because of the amount of time it took to work (it's released slower than Ritalin LA) and it also gave me a slight headache. So far the Ritalin LA has been excellent and the first dose is released within an hour. I stopped Concerta because I just didn't think it was doing all it was cracked up to be. Just some thoughts.I have been hearing that concerta takes a while to kickin. Since Math is first that may be the problem.
I plan on talking to Ped next appointment.
Thanks
Thanks Bugzapper
We are really pleased with the progress. It seemed it took along time to get tot his point. This year is the year he made progress.
Actually your point of food is interesting. He does not eat breafast very often. We usually have to really put it in his mouth. I wonder if food would help or make it worse.
Thanks

Skibber.
Food at regular times is a very important thing!
Can't keep the engine running nearly empty and expect good results. Not to mention the meds are designed to work with a normally running metabolism!
It may be better too to design a med plan that is using a quick-release med in the morning, followed by an extended release later. Quick release would be up and running immediately - then as it begins to peter out a couple hours later the extended release could be used to keep him going until school ends. Talk to your MD about that.
But for sure - get him going with lots of protein and carbs so he has the fuel to burn while the meds work. He may not even realize he's hungry so you'll likely have to monitor that.
Have you brought him into a child therapist who specializes in ADHD?? There are theraputic exercises to teach him new coping methods - and I can't emphasize it enough as he will need to know how to react and when you have ADHD you learn sometimes the wrong methods.
Good luck!
