Adderall XR | ADHD Information

My son was 7 when he was put on 5 mg. of Adderal XR  (he is 9 now)
Like you, we noticed that he was focusing better in school but he became angry and irritable after school.  My son is VERY happy-go-lucky so this was disturbing for us and him (he didn't know why he was feeling this way)  He also had appetite loss and sleep issues.  I guess they call it "rebound"when they get moody after the drug wears off  and you are suppose to give the child another 1/2 dose after school to try and eleviate this side effect.  We were unwilling to give him more as he has a heart murmur and we were not that comfortable giving him even the 5 mg.  The side effects disturbed us more than his inattentiveness so we discontinued the meds. after a year.  He has not been on anything for over a year.  We now have a tutor once a week and he gets extra reading help 4 days a week in school.  We see the neoropsychologist on Fri. to make sure it really is inattentive ADD and not something more or different.  After that we will decide where to go from here.

My son was having this problem when he was on Adderall XR ONLY.  He is now on Focalin 10mg @ 7am, 12noon, and 3pm along with Adderall XR 25mg @ 7am.  He can focus more throughout the day and can concentrate on homework in the afternoon.  He is 10.

I don't know if this helps, but thought I would add my 2 cents worth.

My 8 year old daughter who is an ex-preemie was diagnosed a little over a month ago with ADHD without hyperactivity.  Her pediatrician perscribed Adderall XR 5 mg at first and then last week upped her dose to 10 mg.  She is doing better in school as fas as completing her work on time.  She is still having problems paying attention during instruction.  The major problem she is having is extreme irritability in the afternoons lasting until she goes to bed at night.  She gets so angry so easily and screams, slams doors and cries about everything.  Is this one of the withdrawal symptoms?  Do all of these type of medicines have the same effects?  Will this get better?

Thanks for the advice.  I am going to begin the search for a neoropsychologist.

To Brandie01522:

Was your son having a problem with irritability before you added the Focalin?  Has adding the focalin helped.  Does he have problems falling asleep?

Thanks

make sure you get a good one. the dr lawlis on drphil is turning out to be a quack.
There are no negative posts on him, ANYPLACE. which leads me to think.. PHONEY..

i would get someone  who does not like dr phil.

i would also look at the food factor.

she needs food to keep her mind going, I would try protiens and such. like PB&J.

the mind needs fuel to keep going and maybe this is an effect of that.

but it is probably just overtired from the medications requiring her mind to stay focused and work more.  This is generally the side effect and may require additional medication or a medication change if it works the mind too much
