Looking for Career Advice - Engineering | ADHD Information

Share

I think this is my first message I’ve posted here. I was diagnosed with ADHD in February; I think, the diagnosis was reconfirmed by a 2nd psychologist. I sort of still don’t completely believe the diagnosis especially the H part of it but, I have most of the symptoms that I’ve seen listed in various sources. I’m posting because I’m concerned about my career or lack there of. I studied Anthropology and achieved my B.A. Degree in 1997, I have since then had various unsatisfying and frustrating office assistant jobs (keeping the title general). I financed my own education including a failed attempt at an expensive certificate program that I thought would be practical but, I’m thinking of going back to school for a 2nd B.A. in Mechanical Engineering. However, I haven’t practiced math in over 16 years and would need to start at low level; all in all, it would take a long time to accomplish the degree. I also feel a little scared that I’m making another bad decision and that I don’t have the discipline to work hard and consistently. I’m thinking of Engineering for a few reasons, but, the biggest ones are career satisfaction and financial independence. I’m creative and like to make things work better or more efficient and really love good design. When I say that I like to make things work better, I don’t think I’ve actually ever put this into practice, I just think about these solutions to problems, sometimes mundane things that I think could be more effective. I like objects that multitask for example. Sorry to ramble, I would just like to know if there are Engineers out there and what circumstances got you there, do you like it? What kind of Engineering, what kind of environment do you work in? Is it rigid? Do Engineers tend to be more rigid or creative? What are your frustrations and joys in the field? How did you know to pursue it?

Thank you

Hi, and welcome ,

I'm not an engineer but I do know that it is important to persue a career that is very interesting to you; something your have found that you are passionate about.  This is especially important to those of us with ADHD.

Can I ask why you got your B.S. in anthropology?  Is there no career you would be interested in with this background?

If it's engineering your sure you want to persue, make sure you check out all the different  areas.  Even visit different companies that hire different types of engineers to find out exactly what their job description is.

My nephew and his wife are both environmental engineer's. They get to go "out in the field", or get outside sometimes.

Just check out thoroughly before you commit.

Good Luck
