Hello all. Alittle bit of background. I am a stepmother of a beautiful 7 year old little girl. Her father is non-custodial and is in the Army. He is preparing for his 2nd tour in Iraq and right now. I am in close contact with stepdaughter and bio-mom while my husband is training.
My stepdaughter has been diagnosed 3, yes 3 times with ADHD. Once with bio-mom (when she was 3), once with us (at 5-6) and again with bio-mom (at 7). We had her on Concerta, which was wonderful and when custody turnover came, bio-mom did not continue her meds...
Stepdaughter has been on meds all 3 times. The first one I can not recall the name, but it was a really high dosage which made stepdaughter a zombie. Mentioned above was Concerta, 13 mg. And the most recent is Strattera, 50 mg.
Bio-mom had her re-diagnosed and again, medicated, but about 1 month later she quit medicating because she "can't afford it".
Bio-mom recently took stepdaughter to the dr. and the dr. said that stepdaughter is not ADHD, but is severly depressed. He right away medicated her with anti-depressants (Zoloft, 25 mg.)
Can ADHD look like severe depression? I am having trouble taking in the depression story and any insight would be wonderful!
Thank you!

I am not sure if adhd can be mistaken for depression - but I do know that adhd people do become depressed at times. Not completing tasks, lack of good social skills, poor memory, lack of concentration, always in trouble by teachers and parents - all lead to a low self esteem and depression. Please look into the affects of zoloft on children as there has been research and the side effects are frightening. There is talk about increased risk of suicide in teenagers taking this drug. A child of 6 should not be "depressed" without something causing it. Perhaps she is fearful of the iraq war and the world safety. Perhaps counselling may be more the option for this child. But while her daddy is fighting in a war - could it not be considered normal for a child to be experiencing severe emotional problems. I would question the dr who medicated your child with zoloft - after she has been diagnosed 3 times with adhd. Sure, depression can look like ADHD. What are the symtoms your stepdaughter shows? Depression involves lack of motivation, lack of energy, lack of enthusiasm to stay interested in something. That looks rather like ADHD lack of attention.
Things that help with both ADHD and depression in my opinion include: omega-3 essential fatty acids, vitamin C, physical exercise and getting enough sleep.
If she has been diagnosed 3 times, starting at age 3, I would also question the dr who put her on zoloft. That is one of the anti depressants that experts, including the AMA recommend NOT giving to young children. That prescription alone would make me question this dr.
Doesn't armed services insurance cover all dependants? If the bio mom has an insurance card for her daughter, I don't see how she can use "can't afford it" as an excuse. I always heard that the insurance was some of the best. I don't have first hand knowledge of it though so maybe you could let me know. It might help with someone else sometime.
