10 Questions | ADHD Information

yes, why do you want to know?

I just wanted to put my own difficulties into a questioneer.  I know this is strange, but I'm a strange person sometimes.  Honestly, I did not get any of the questions or symptoms off a questioneer.  I just wrote out my experience in the form of a questioneer to see if you guys have what I do.  If you have what I do, and you have ADD then It follows that I have ADD.   The light bulb is on.

I'm sad though.  My mother put me on medication when I was 6, and she said I turned into a perfect child, very organised and straight A student.  She said it scared her, and she took me off the medication.  I've had a very, very difficult life.

I just realized this all last night, and I'm freaking out just a little bit.

Thats a new one! Your mother took you off meds because they worked the way everyone else here is hoping they will work for their child! Are you sure your mother didn't get scared of the meds themselves and what she had heard about side effects?

Everyone here has had a hard life, some of us harder than others. No one here has had it easy so you have come to the right place for support and understanding.

If I had had meds as a child that worked as well as  they did for you, I would certainly consider getting back on them for college and work. Wow!

Welcome! Barb

I was an overly loving and dependent child, and my mother said that she felt like she had lost her "baby," and that I didnt even act like the same person.  She also said she was afraid of keeping me on the meds for the rest of my life, but I suspect she missed my sick dependency on her. I think it was dexedrine. What a tragedy.  Ok, I need to go throw up.

1.  Do you find it difficult to take tests in a group of people.  Are you always the last one finished, even though you know the information and the information is not very difficult to understand.  And, are these problems a result of not being able to focus because of a distraction, even if the distraction is slight?  Does the mere presents of another person distract you when you are trying to focus?

2.  Do you find it easy to listen and learn when you are interested or passionate about the subject, but very difficult to learn or pay attention to dry information such as instruction?

3.  Does information, spoken or read, seem to go "in one ear, and out the other," without being absorbed, like your brain is not engaged, especially when the information is dry or you are even slightly distraction?

4.  Does it seem like you don't have any willpower to pay attention to information, spoken or read, even when you desperately want or need to focus?

5.  Do you find it dfficult to learn and remember directions, step-by-step processes and other "insignificant" information?

6.  Do you feel scattered when trying to focus on a task, especially if there is something to distract you and even if the distraction is slight?

7.  Do you gravitate toward science, or "the how things work mentality," because it organises a normally chaotic world?

8.  Do you find it difficult to follow a conversation, especially if the information is new and even if it is necessary and important that you follow along? eg. listening to a teacher or boss.

9.  Do you often get the feeling of "the lights are on, but no body's home," especially when distracted or uninterested, like the brain is disengaged in neutral?

10.  Are you unable to focus and process information unless you have a high interest and not distracted?  Does even the smallest distraction throw you completely off track?

Let me organise this into one question:  Do find it difficult to focus on information and therefore learn the information because either the information is dry and seemingly uninteresting, or you are distracted, no matter how slight the distraction.  And, in those situations, is it very difficult to focus no matter how important it is to focus, and no matter how much will power you exert in order to focus?

OpenYourEyes38200.7371990741Meds alone (25mg Adderall XR) for me has made all the difference in the world! I cannot begin the list fo things that it has changed and things it hasn't (that I didn't want it to). I'm still goofy and fun loving but I'm have the ability/mental capacity to be organized now. I comprehend written instruction after only reading it once, I am able to be less distracted by little tiny things, I don't fidget nearly as much and I only say stupid foolish things half as often as I used to in social settings. All this was just with medications and no therapy. lizzy38201.6324305556Yes to all of the above when I'm off of meds.  Welcome to the board! Yeah, I feel that way when I'm off meds. Yes, I feel almost all of the above. Lizzy, how much difference do meds alone make? I fear I still may have many months of waiting to get the correct diagnosis, so I'm trying to read up as much as I can / look into issues I can change myself (diet, exercise). But am I right in thinking that all of this is futile without the correct medication?
