Does anyone else have poor spelling? | ADHD Information

I am actually really, really good at spelling (I was a spelling bee champ in school) but I have a hard time with writing.  If I have to write something, it's a mess with skipped letters, splotches, and crossing out words. I am embarrassed when I have to write a note to my son's teacher.... I know how to spell it but I can't seem to write it, and I have also never been able to grasp the pencil in the "correct" way.  I can type a whole lot easier than I can write.

I can speall real weall I thienk!

Just kidding....yes, I have always had spelling problems...not sure why...but most people with ADHD that i know have this problem...

When I was younger and interior jobs did not pay the bills I had an accounting job at a law firm...(a major one) and I had to enter the description of the expense in front of my mgr who was training me...and I did not know how to spell breakfast at that time....and the expense was "expense incurred at breakfast with..." and I wrote brakfast....she totally freaked out..she was like...you made a typo..and laughed...I did not even know I was spelling it wrong...and I had to ask where the typo was...she thought I was a freak for not knowing how to spell breakfast...well I now know how so that never happened again...then everytime I had a word I could not spell I would write it down...then occassionally I would review the words and the correct spelling so that I would learn to spell them properly.

Two I prob. need to work on now is occassionally and properly...not sure they are spelled correctly.

I did not know that spelling difficulties and ADHD were commonly seen together???  Reading difficulties, as well, or just spelling and writing?  My son is dyslexic/ADHD, so this is a good thing for me know.  Just spelling for me.

I've always had poor spelling. I always want to spell everything phonetically, the way we should spell .  The word sleap always makes me second guess, or is it sleep?

Have gotten better since I taught 1-5 graders for the past 6 years

I thought there was spell check on here! Hmmmm wishfull (or is that wishful?) thinking I guess.

I wrote an email to someone the other day and wrote Holly Crap! as my header.

They emailed me back asking if that was a new form of Christmas decoration. I couldn't figure it out until I finally saw that I put an extra "L" in the word Holy.

Way is ther no spel chek on here?

If I really want to sound intelligent, I type on word first, use spell check then cut and paste.  Only on serious threads, most of the time I prefer to type how I talk. Mistakes and typos don't concern me.

Guess it depends on my mood. It's been rumored that I can be a moody biach.

cant spell to save my life, have ADHD and Dyslexia, i can spell the same word difrently 5 times in one paragraph, one of my college lecturers underlined all of my wrong spellings in a hand writen asignment (i usualy type every thing) just as an experiment, it was scary

THANK GOD FOR SPELL CHECK

You may have dyslexia on top of ADHD.  I have ADHD and spell fine most of the time, but tend to leave out letters and words when I am writing because I am also dyslexic.  There's no medicine for it, but you may be able to improve with practice now that you are older.  Did you have difficulty learning phonics in school?

It just a thought.
That's what spell check's for. I never thought I had a problem with spelling until they invented spell check.  I was appauled by how many words I misspelled. Now I'm paranoid about it.  In fact I wish I has spell check right now. Please, please don't tell me I misspelled anything...I intentionally used little words.

[QUOTE=MafiaKiddo]I have Horrible Horrible spelling. I even play a lot of those spelling web games to try to improve but no matter how much I practice I still suck at it. I usually resort to yelling at the screen. Comments like "oh come on whats wrong with that" and "Wow thats a word."

Yep I can not spell a lick . . . but can spot a misspelled word a mile away?
What is with that, lol. one of the gifts of the ADD.I have Horrible Horrible spelling. I even play a lot of those spelling web games to try to improve but no matter how much I practice I still suck at it. I usually resort to yelling at the screen. Comments like "oh come on whats wrong with that" and "Wow thats a word."

I try all kinds of tricks like spelling something a few different ways to see which one looks correct. This of course never works because none of them look like they are right. Occasionally I'll look up a word in a dictionary and still think it looks wrong.

On top of that I have the worst handwriting you could imagine. If I taped a pen to my dogs tale he would end up with a more readable document then I could create. In general bad handwriting is only annoying to me since I can easily type up anything important. Still there is nothing more annoying then getting to the store pulling out your list and not being able to read a damn thing on the entire paper.

My brother says I have lazy writing because I usually only attempt to write the first few letters of each word before I digress into a wavy line with a few dots overtop if the word contained and i's.

LMAO I can hear him now "You can't read that word cus you didn't write a word, You cheated, All you wrote was two letters and a squiggly line" and of course I always reply with "shutup" to which he replies "Nice come back spelling machine"
OMG!...My spells don't work no more!!!

(Halloween is over)
Yeah, I flunked spelling in Harry Potter 101

Very good spelling.  I had some tough nasty english teachers in elementary school.  Would berate over simple things like using "cop" instead of "police officer" - and got me hurt and paranoid to the point where I became adept at spelling.  Math - took longer.

I too have a form of dyslexia and spelling problems. I am FOREVER transposing numbers when copying them down or entering them in a computer program.

As far as spelling, my boss stands over my shoulder when dictating a letter and i type as he speaks. When I come to a word that is mispelled, instead of telling me what I did wrong, he'll overly sound it out. DUDE, JUST SAY IT!

The dyslexia specialist who dxed my son said that statistics are showing 30%-40% of dyslexics are comorbid ADD/ADHD.  Just a thought for you guys, who are struggling so with spelling and writing.  Have you been tested for dyslexia?my spelling sucks.  i read reel reel good though....

I have AWFUL spelling. I have been working on it and have been slowly improving I'm just wondering if anyone here also has poor speling?  I'm not blaming everything on ADHD but as you can relate school was less than a good experience for me. I just got diagnosed last week and I'm 28. I am starting to see that many of the things that I failed in thoughout my life, in some way stem back to my ADHD, which opens my eyes to the fact that I'm not a stupid mis-creation.
