I have an 8year old in 3rd grade. He has been diangnosed with ADHD two years ago. Then his teacher was understanding of his condition and tried to be patient with him, and gave him slightly more attention then the other children. He now goes to a new school, which really doesnt have a program or special accomidations for kids like him. Are there any services schools must offer for such kids. What are my rights in terms of demanding what my child needs and deservation.
The only thing that they have offered me so far is to speak with the school psychologist.
(??????this is for all the question marks I forgot in my haste.)
www.wrightslaw.com is a legal website which can really help. They will help you understand how to determine whether he is eligible and what laws cover it. They will also tell you how to go about getting what he needs.
Is he failing or behind in anything? Does he have severe behavior problems. What exactly do you see that makes you believe he needs intervention? If you can tell us, we can help you figure things out.
There is a provision under the disability act that covers attention/behavior problems. It's section 504. It covers everything for children with ADD, ADHD, ODD, etc. and school. I don't have any websites right now, but I know that you can do a search and find some very helpful information regarding this Act. I've been there and I feel for anyone that has a teacher who isn't very understanding.
Bless you, Roxanne
MommaCobb, I down loaded some info on the 504act, regarding disability.
1. Is ADD or ADHD fall under those guidelines of disability
2. I began to read a few pages of the 504 act, and its alittle complicated for me.
to the best of your ability, what exactly do you remember what the reference was for ADD/ADHD kids in the public school system?
